If it's been set to time n distance then the service message will appear after 12 months or 9400 miles. You can run over but any excess mileage is shown as a negative and comes off your next 9400 mile countdown.

I'm not aware of any way to reset the service indicator other than via VAG-Com.

As to why it has come on early (what mileage ??, what time frame ??) i can't comment without more info.
