Replacing rear brake pads - help needed

2542 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Charlie169
Hi guys

I was about to start replacing my rear brake pads earlier today and i noticed in the Haynes manual that it said that you must discard the old caliper guide bolts once you have taken them out and replace them with new ones. however the pads i bought did not come with guide bolts and i have looked online but cant seem to find replacement bolts, are they special bolts or just locking ones? can the old ones be re-used?

I really appreciate any help

Thanks

This is not essential... they are known as stretch bolts and have some thread lock on the end of them,, they ar a 13mm bolt but i have re-used the same ones a few times... just remember that you require a special tool for contracting the pistons in the caliper....

hope this helps

Thanks for the help Lee, is there anything special about these bolts or would normal 13mm bolts do the same thing? also i have the tool for the piston, just didnt anticipate having to replace the guide bolts!!!

Thanks again

Alex
Never replaced the bolts and had them off more than I care to remember
Just put some thread lock on them and re use them
All manufacturers recommend that you change them and for pennies you probably should. If you don't, at least remember to put threadlock on them before tightening up.

FYI - If you buy the pads from VW, the bolts come with the pads.
Thanks again guys, the only other concern i have is that if one of the bolts break il be stuffed without a spare. any one know were i can pick a spare up?

Thanks

Highly unlikely I would have thought, if you're worried one might break then surely all of them could, in which case you may as well just renew...

VW dealer is probably the best place to start, they'll certainly do them, though I'm not sure about the quantity, last time I went in there for a bolt, they could only sell them in packs of 50. I would hope it would different for the brake bolts though.
Thanks will try VW first :)
If its the rear caliper then the bolts are torque to yield. My Bentley manual states they should be replaced. Personally for the pennies they cost I would replace them.
If you buy pads from a vw dealer,, New bolts are included in the box
GSF include bolts in the box too. but tbh iv e never replaced the bolts unless they've come with the kit because its something new that i've paid for so id rather use it. on the other cars, i've just whacked thread-lock on the bolts and torqued them up
