Fantastic little cars, especially the original version 1s. Very light, enough power and an entertaining chassis. Not my cup of tea in the looks department but certainly a future classic, if not a current one.

Trouble is, I bet there are plenty of wrong ones out there. Quite a few will have fallen into the hands of the Max Power brigade and had all their internals ripped out, massive ICE systems installed, been lowered, tuned, etc all of which will have ruined what, in its natural form, is a superb car.

Good good glad you like them. They are a bit dated in looks but i love them personally! As for being dated in terms of technology....not really! Evo tested the willy not long ago and all they could do is praise! [:D]

Although technically i'm not getting a williams i'm getting a williams hybrid. Was a 1.8 16v and had an engine transplant ect
Its running about 170bhp, big brakes ect

As for a GTT being quicker?! Dont know who told you that! lol

I don't think the style is dated. My fav looking Clio (appart from the V6) and better than the current crop. Evo like any nimble little GTi, compare it to the current Trophy and it is underpowered and the suspension technology is massively different. Autocar voted the Trophy the best handling GTi ever...a big claim.

Really wish I'd had the money in '93 to get a series 2 Clio Williams - Ended up buying a '93 16V Clio. Stonking performance and the best seats. What really sold me the car was watching an episode of Top Gear at the time interviewing a lad who'd bought a Williams and his Dad had commented that "this car has more dials than my Aston!".[:)]

Look here http://www.r5-turbo.co.uk
What am i looking at?! A R5 can be made to be quicker yeah but as standard they are hardly a match for the 1.8 16v clio. Dont get me wrong i do like them though...

A standard williams can 1/4 in late 14's where as a R5 is mid 15's

A Williams in late 14's? Doubt that to be honest. A new Civic Type R can do it in the low 15's as do Focus RS's and similar beasts. Even the mighty 182 Clio might struggle high 14's with its 30 extra bhp over the Williams.

You will find that most 182's struggle to keep with williams'. I'm telling no porkys here

You have to remember that on rollers most standard williams make between 155/160bhp and they only weigh in at 960kgs. Although 150bhp is stated its a little more once the engine has a few miles on it. Bit lik the Vauxhaul XE lumps. Apposed to the 182 that weighs 1100kgs odd. And if you compare 0-60's the only reason the williams is slower is because it needs an extra gear change to third

As for the 1/4 times this has been proven many many many times. I know of 3 williams that are only mildly-ish tuned (cams, chip, filter, exhaust) that run low 14's. Go on WC and ask the question and everyones times. Its all proved with evidence back everyone up

Very underated cars really

When did Evo name the willy as the all time best hot hatch? Did I miss it then?

They are nice cars but used to fall apart pretty quickly when brand new hat to think what they are like now, saying that I'm sure one of the car mags tested a 5 GT turbo a while back and said that it did still rattle and squeak but no more than when it was 6 months old so perhaps the willy's the same.

I thought the Clio Williams was supposed to be pretty rapid, but I beat one the other day in my '99 Upsoluted AGU, and it was a genuine clio williams (though it was driven by a bloke wearing a baseball cap).

Don't know if he had a tonne of ICE weighing it down though because he had it up loud and I could definately hear the sub making the boot rattle.

But when I got home I checked on Fasthatchback and it wasn't a quick as I thought, but no doubt it could have beaten me if there was twisty stuff.

djhorace - Fair enough mate. I respect what you are saying and any turbo car is easy to tune. I love both cars, infact i'm quite a fan of a few Renaults tbh

The willys can be made fast though! Throttle bodies!! Although they are expensive! lol Check this one:-

http://forum.cliosport.net/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=16&TopicID=175315&PagePosition=4

Ran a 13.4 1/4! lol

Vincec79 - Hmm dont know what was going on there. For better stats see www.letstorquebhp.com that states the proper times. Although it does say 15.something for the 1/4. All i'll say is check www.williamsclio.co.uk and see what the standard willy guys have been running at the pod and york. Some very quick cars!!

The one i'm getting has 144atw anyways so about 165/170 @ the flywheel [:D]
