Want to add some THUMP to my OEM setup.

MFD2 has pre-outs so no bother there.

The existing speaker setup is adequate for now, but want a sub with a box to fit easily in the boot, and an amp to run it.

I've got the T-shirt for roof-vibrating ICE so no need to go that far again, but I do miss that rumble-ability.

You have quite a few options since you just want one channel running a single sub.Depending on the budget, I would certainly look at:

Directed - excellent new range, Audiobahn, and if money is no object, Genesis.

I am running just under 300W and thats fine, so there are lots of components that fit the criteria.

It depends on what music you listen to, Some subs just do bass others are musical. I've got a Diamond Audio Sub which is powered by an Alpine M300 Mono amp. A good place to look is www.caraudiodirect.com

Mate. I got great results with the previous car adding a Bazooka RS10 150W powered subwoofer to the Gamma OEM unit with DSP and upgraded speakers. Took all the hard work away from the door speakers and allowed them to shine. Very well made bit of kit, easy to remove for those family moments.

I have a trade contact who would line you up a deal too (the guy you spoke to before on another matter matey).

a nice Rockford Fosgate punch amp and 10 inch sub.  Subtle and powerful, and you can upgrade to run rears off it too in future. Quite cheap too.

wheel well, as I use my boot all day every day so cannot afford to lose

I would build one myself, thats not a problem but I am thinking that
due to lack of capacity/volume that it it would need some clever
porting/acoustic engineering to sort it out or I could just use a very
small sub like 8 inch I guess.

Infinity Kappa Series Perfect 12.1 12". One of the Best Sub's on the market IMO. HUGE magnet and weigh's tons more than most other 12's! Sound good too.

If I get the pre-outs sorted from my MFD2, presumably I need an amp with a crossover built in? - and what about fine-tuning (apart from main amp gain control)?

Personally I'd keep away from them, I have heard one or two odd stories. www.cel-direct.co.uk and www.caraudiodirect.com are places I would recommend. Depending on what you want to acheive you can use the crossovers on the Amps, I take it the MFD only has 1 set of preouts.

I think the biggest you sub you can get in the stealthbox is 10"...its in the small print. Also found out that you can run various amps off the standard hu, stuff like DLS[]
