Radiator fans do not spin!

slow speed fans are driven straight from the battery via the coolant thermoswitch (not the temp sensor). The slow speed fans can run independently of the a/c or fan controller as long as the supply is good. There is a common fault where the connection in the small fuse panel on top of the battery overheats and melts so even if the fuse appears good, the power may not be reaching the fans.

Fast mode fans are only fed from the FCM

I found a diagram when I was diagnosing my Audi TT air con which I found really useful so I'll attach it here in case it's any help.

Ahh I don't know the proper ins and outs of the system on a golf (yet) but the components are certainly all identical which is why I assumed the same operation. On my TT they are fed from S164 and 180, the same fuses as in my golf and the slow speed fans can be forced on by shorting pins on the thermoswitch (the same one on golf and tt) even if the fcm is unplugged. The fcm can control slow speed too if the air con is on. Apologies if my assumptions made me give false info.

I'm fairly sure that diagram plus all the diagnostic tests I tried came from a thread on a USA jetta forum but I can't find it for reference at the moment.

Hi,

In case it's useful to anyone, I found the mega thread that I followed when faulting my TT air con system. It's also based on the Mk4 platform hence why I assumed our golfs were the same. I might have a poke around under my own bonnet tomorrow just for my own curiosity.

It is suggesting as I thought, that slow speed operation is independent of FCM when the thermoswitch sees a high enough temperature (since the initial test is with ignition off). A good read is the fan troubleshooting guide attached at the bottom of post #1
