After speaking with my dealer today (to have a look at a 4motion), we got onto the subject of the new Golt GTi in his showroom.

Priced around ?20K, I told him that it seemed expensive. He obviously disagreed, but I asked him to spec it up to my std (high power) RX8 and the GTi became to ?22K! The same price.

IMHO, that makes the 8 a bargain. However, he stated that the new GTi makes a mockery of the used R32s around the forecourts (he didn't have one as they won't stock it). He claims there are dealers in the Midlands that have a stockpile of R32s (he showed me a list) thatare priced in excess (?23k) of the new GTi. He claimed that they are struggling to shift them because interest has been diverted to the new GTi.

It therefore begs the question, what affect will/is the new GTi going to have on 4motions and R32s. Is the new Golf that good? I must admit, I had a good look at it and sat in it, and to be honest, it felt huge, with the driving position of a bus!

I cannot believe its ?20K as a starting price, but having said that, there is interest in it.

I suppose the stealers have to make hay while they can.

Discounted R32s sounds nice.[^]

I don't think it's necessarily a lack of interest in the R32.. it's the scandalous prices that dealers are STILL asking for them that means they aren't selling. You could get away with ?22k+ about 9 months ago..... you can't now.

R32 values can only drop and drop.

The R32 is undoubtedly the star of the mrk4 range, and when it first came out the R32 commanded huge demand.

Now we are going to see the same demand shift towards the NEW GTI.

It's simple. the New Gti will command a huge demand for the next 12 months

(like the R32 did last yr or two ago)

People see the New Gti as the 'IN Thing' to be seen in. This can only mean that R32 prices suffer as a result.

If u ever wanted a better time to get an R32, I'm sure the time is about to come

Nice summary Gti Fly - reckon that's about the size of it.

I never saw it that way, thats very true Phil! Maybe for that reason we should be glad that VW saw fit to set the price at ?20k!

Well I've been offered pretty damn low prices for mine but dealers are still asking STUPID money for them once they have ripped off their "customers".

I think they should do themselves a favour, realise that R32 owners are important customers and stop trying to make ?4k on each 2nd hand R32 they sell.

One in Bath with 18k miles for ?22k. Wtf?!

According to EVO CAR O THE YEAR - the new GTI came in the top three and its only 0.4 of a second slower than the R32 etc. Plus its fresh and up to date! Every review I've read has nothing but praise for the new GTi which is pretty damn incredible!

I feel the reason why so many R32's being on sale at the moment is that most of them are overpriced hence don't shift. As a result the market is satured, buyers pick one car over another or they tend to leave it for another time.

I had this discussion with a fellow member few days ago.

I own both of these. A Mk4 R32 and a Mk5 GTI. At the end of the day its all down to personal taste and preferance as we all agree.

R32's aren't exactly perfect and all cars have negative points. There are some things I like about the new GTI and there are some that I don't.

However in the end I still feel much more inclined towards my R32 and if I have to pick between the two. I will choose to keep hold of the R32.

I can top that...just test drove a MKV at Breeze Poole where the staff and service suck and the prices suck even more. While I was there, I spotted two Rs - a silver 3 Door with 16k for ?23,995 and a Deep Blue 3 door with 6,000 miles at...wait for it... ?24,995!!!

Firstly, regardless of the merits of which car is best, there is a new GTI and thats like a new Playstation - demand will be huge. The R32 has had its day as the VW of the moment and its time for the silly prices to come down; regardless of what people claim there has always been a steady supply of Rs on the market, and if you want one they have always been out there.

Secondly, The MKV GTI is a HOOT guys - if you haven't driven one, do it now. I don't like Golfs, I don't like the MKV and I don't like 4 cylinde engines generally, but that car is a riot. Fast, decent engine note, handling in another league to the MKIV, pretty good interior (nowhere near as bad as I thought), decent spec and options list, only a 2 month wait and its a GTI. I was thoroughly impressed.

Just read that after all the rave reviews over the last two months, dealers are no longer discounting the GTi (MKV) as everyone 'must have it darling'. Could get a 4 figure discount only a month ago....& www.drivethedeal.com now admit their discounted ones will not arrive until September......

Similiarly Anni prices are heading South...
