Does anybody know if there's a way to spruce up the dials on a 1.8T AUQ? I've seen different units such as swapping out the unit with a more updated one but requires programming. How about the skin? (Eg. The layer that sits on top of the mph LEDs) hope that makes sense

you can skin as much as you want... all you like it's been done since the early 80-ties... any sticker company can sort you out providing they have the correct template for it.. but if you look on certain websites (look for lay-overs) you can buy some pre-defined ones those shops can also customize them with what ever extra you want on them.

look here and this is what they look like ( half fis model cluster)

Ok wickid so I can then the OEM looks pretty dated. Is it easy to dismantle? I think I got as so far as to remove the front plastic screen. How did I take the skin off or do I place it on top? What about the needles?

look in the how2 section all your questions have been answered about taking the cluster apart and putting it back together.. and that comes with pictures too so you can see every step way easier than me explaining it.

Yes, there are several ways to spruce up the dials on a 1.8T AUQ engine. One way is to replace the instrument cluster with a newer or aftermarket unit that has updated and more modern-looking dials. However, as you mentioned, this may require programming to ensure compatibility with your car's systems.
Another way to enhance the appearance of the dials is to replace the skin or overlay that sits on top of the mph LEDs with a custom design or color scheme. These overlays are often made from vinyl or other materials and can be purchased from aftermarket suppliers or custom shops.
It's important to note that any modifications made to the instrument cluster should be done carefully and with proper knowledge to avoid damaging the delicate electronics and wiring of the cluster. It's recommended to seek the advice of a professional or experienced mechanic before attempting any modifications to your car's instrument cluster.

Needles pop up with a kitchen knife. Use paper under the dial to avoid scratching it. Programming is easy though, a 5 minute job. Clusters vary from pre-2000 to post-2000 (LEDs are in different places) and you can't go from IMMO3 back to IMMO2 (>2000 back to <2000).
