I've been doing this ever since windows XP came out, but did it for someone today and they couldnt believe how much faster their computer was responding!

Basically, windows XP uses up resources making things look pretty. So if you want things to continue looking pretty, don't do this, though you can change it around as much as you like.

If you go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings

Then under the visual effects tab, click the 'Adjust for best perfomance' radio button, and then go down the list and check the 'Smooth edges for screenfonts' tick box (you don't have to, thats just the only one I reccomend keeping).

Click apply and once its all done you will see things have turned a bit gray and dull....BUT!

Now click on start and let the menu's appear, maximise and minimize windows. Things should happen completely instantly.

Let me know if it's made your windows experience any better, everyone should do it as far asI'm concerned!

Does that also alter the registry MenuShowDelay value from the default 400 to 0? This is the standard delay - in milliseconds - between you pointing at something and the menu opening and it totally does my head in! It's been there since Win95 and I've manually changed it on every machine I've touched ever since. My colleagues used to joke that you could tell I had been on a machine 'cos it had Speedy Menus [:D]

I also manually turn off stupid fading and scrolling menu effects.

Every customer I've done this for (mainly because I can't STAND working on slow machines with a ton of poxy interface effects going on at the same time to make things worse) has reported that their PC is much much faster when in fact I've only removed the crappy effects - the computer is no more powerful, but if they're happy then who cares?! [:D][Y]

No it doesnt, but then I hate telling people to go and edit their registry.

For anyone who's interested in doing it it's found under:

HKU > Control Panel > Desktop

If you do all of the above and the shadow delay, your computer will be lightening fast in terms of showing windows and loading the menu.

It seems though as if its a 'nerds only' thing from the response so far! [:D]

Funny thing is, us nerdy types, we always seem to have the rubbish computers without the bells and whistles, but turn all the crap off. I've always found that. The regular users seem to want 2 gig of ram, latest processor, massive hard drives.

Me, I just find some bits, put a computer together and thats that!

When I started my current job three years ago, on my first day I went to my room and on the desk was a pile of crap and I was told to build my own PC out of it - I later found that this was some kind of "test" because I had put on my CV that I can build PCs - DUH!!!

Apart from bringing in my own, 3Com NICs because all they have is cheap unreliable crap, this same PC runs 24/7 without failure (PIII 933 overclocked to 1+ GHz) and feels much more responsive than most of our customers' brand new P4 PCs do after six months.

That doesn't mean I don't want a more mega powerful PC for both home and work though. The home one is 6 years old now and really needs replacing but I'm now old and boring and need to save money for more important things [:(]

NVidia's NView has a similar function to Speedy Menus to make the windows snap open and close instantly, but with full on colour and rendering so it all still looks pretty, but when I last used it the thing was rather unreliable to say the least.

Does anyone know ....

When i open up a webpage, scroll down the page instantly...it will move a bit then freeze for a few seconds as if its loading then itll carry on at normal speed

Is it related to ISP or just my computer being slow etc... its annoying at times. [:'(]

Probably is just still loading, especially if its a porn page with lots of images [:D]

However, could also be related to spyware issues etc. Could be graphics card, could be many things.

Nosaj, does Sara have her own login? If so, she will get her old display.

I hope you guy's are not taking the pee with the 'its sooooo much faster' stuff! [:p]

The shudder thing is caused by a large image, usually a BMP or similar, being resized to fit on a page or in a user image in a forum, ie the little one on the left of every user's post...

Those who have the above images will cause browser's to shudder....
