Hi There,

Could someone help me I have a question about a 99 S VW Golf GTI 1.8T gears. Since I bought the golf I have always found that when the engine is cold I have problems using first and second gear. As you s elect the gear it is "crunchy" as you put it in. I always have the ability to s elect the gear but its just rough. Car drives no problems when gear is s elected.

VW dealer says that this is normal without actually looking at it. Does anyone else have this problem??? and if not what would the cause be???

Many Thanks

Dean Morgan.

I dunno, I think when it's cold 1st is always going to be a little rough when you s elect it. I've only 11K on the clock and my gearbox is still very tight for some reason. I don't drive the gick out of my car though.

I think the 02J 5 speed boxes (on older cars, on my S reg and almost certainly on yours)

are a much older design than the the newer M boxes. 1st to second on my mine

is very notchy. Again, dealer said this was normal.

Yeah I've thought about changing the oil in mine... mine is a late 01 (02 spec acording to the stealer) and mines a bit.... well... not crunchy! but notchy! no clunks thou!.... still it is a cable change I guess... I'd be interested if anyone knows of a higher performance oil to! I've always supplied my own engine oil to my stealer come service time also as my car does soooo many miles!

Yep, changed to Redline MTL, with very slight improvement only.

Mine gearbox is exactly the same, crunchy into second when cold.

I've just learned to drive around it, but it is crap when compared to other manufacturers, really.....

i have a V plate 1.8T and i had the exact problem. since i bought my car from dealer i got to take it back to them seven times to be investigated and worked on. it is now much better but not totally fixed.

I had the following done:

- replace and adjust linkages

- changed gearbox oil to vw fully synthetic

i even had the syncro looked at and that didnt totally fix the problem either.

I have since driven 03 180bhp models with 6 speed box and they suffer when changing 2nd to 3rd.

its just a vw thing i suppose.

The gearchange on the Golf is notorious for being notchy. I think that almost all of them do that. Mine gives the occasional crunch going into 1'st but only at lunch times on very hot days. Go figure!

My 99 car has done the same for 2 years. Been serviced by 3 different stealers, all of whom said it was "normal". Two weeks ago I asked another stealer to take another look. They advised me that the gear change s elector shaft was badly worn. They fitted a new one and it has transformed the gear change, especially when cold. Cost me ?150 (inc labour charge)and I'm still in "discussions" with VW warranty people as to whether it should be covered, but think I'm winning the case.
