Yay Mk4 ownership! Love it! Genuinely excited every morning...to get in my 17 year old diesel.

So my love affair with the mk4 started in 2007 with a magic black 3dr pd130. I fitted recaro interior, coilies, colour-coded the grabs etc as they were messed up, new clutch and a remap. Sat on BMW BBS 17s for a while, ended up on Matt black TT comps. I'm claiming I started black on black in 2007 lol

So that went so I could afford a house. Ended up with a metallic purple Corrado KR. Loved that too. Some dick flipped up the driver's door with their stolen beamer so decided to paint the thing with rattles and fit some 15*8 lenso wheels - I think they were lenso anyway....

That went and I had some bad family motors, including a b5 Passat estate 20vt, cmax, 407...bleugh

Settled on a decent 325i m sport for a year then moved closer to work so it got sold and I walked for 2 years.

Moved jobs, knackered my ankle, got that fixed...ish....was given a hellish c2 1.4hdi.

Now don't get me wrong, it was free, cost less then I use in loo roll to run and did me a good turn, bit there's a reason I have no pics of it.

That brings me to today. Another pd130, 118k, strong history and receipts but a few niggles, I'll outline them later on if only for a list for me to work from and remember.

3 kids and a new house, a penchant for tattoos and holidays means going will be slow. And probably not at all interesting.

Sorry about that.

Sooooo.....

Picked it up at the start of June, seemed like a good buy but I noticed some intermittent braking...or lack of. If you've seen my other question then you'll know about it.

Basically the vacuum pipes looked to have been taped potentially causing a leak causing the brake assist function of the vacuum to just...not be there. Pretty scary on your way to a roundabout.

Reality was that 2 pipes had split at both ends each, 2 of these 4 splits had been zipped and taped up. Both replaced for £77 and an hour of my time.

What a difference!

1 job ticked off.

I also have the OE standard rusty boot handle. Took the trim off and no split or broken pipe, motor works fine, spray doesn't follow the wiper BUT no spray.

Then I heard it. The trickling down the c pillar. FFS. Puddle by the rear passenger wheel and boot!

I know there's a right angle connector in there somewhere, so seat belt buckle off, trim off, found the connector - one half of it anyway!

Fished for the other half, reconnected, testing, refitted everything and viola!

Free fixes are the best :) although I did manage to break the cap cover from the buckle. It was an arse to rebolt due to some knackered thread so I won't be fixing this any time soon.

Totally forgot that I bought the car with a broken glovebox...standard mk4 problems!

The handle had completely come away, it worked by using your finger but then the white clips fell away so I had to pull it apart.

In doing so I managed to snap one of the white clips :( figured I'd try Gorilla Glue and it's holding up ok as the stress is along the join not across it so it seems to be strong enough.

You can just about see the glue on the bottom part of the right clip.

So to the handle.

The mechanism seems to be shit metal pieces that rotate in a plastic clip. The clip on the right side in the photo has sheered off. More Gorilla Glue!

Just need some clamps to glue the whole thing together again. Another free fix and if it doesn't last a full glovebox doesn't look too expensive so will just replace.

So I have squeaky brakes. Pretty sure it's drivers front, but then I started getting a very definite metal on metal noise when braking.

Oddly, 1 rear pad was on the line, the other was good. Sticky caliper.

Not having a winder or the time I dropped it at the garage. Turns out it wasn't just sticky, but completely solid.

So I'm a bit lighter, and it's more braking issues, but it's done. Meh.

Yay more things breaking!

In a week where the alternator on the family bus imploded taking out the MAF loom, the golfs biting point has dropped to around about the floor and the pedal is sticking.

I'm hoping it's the master cylinder. Brake fluid looks good, slight bit of fluid on the clutch pedal itself so fingers crossed.

I can't really afford a new clutch right now!

Well master cylinder replaced but the MOT is looming. I'm not confident.

So I've replaced my side indicators as the originals were blown and letting in water. I've got no reverse light regardless of what bulb is in which cluster so it'll fail on that at least.

BUT...

Just got some OEM aeros on the front. My second favourite mod after cruise control!

Considering all i seem to do is find broken bits and fix them, rather than buying anything fun, or that i actually want, I've changed the name of the thread. Hopefully will be fixing things every week or so as time and funds allow.

So far:

  • Brake vac lines replaced
  • Interior courtesy light fixed
  • HVAC control bulb replaced
  • Side repeaters replaced
  • Leaking rear washer tubing fixed
  • OE aero arms and blades on the front
  • Seized caliper replaced
  • Clutch master cylinder replaced
  • fresh MOT

Things left to do....that i already know about:

  • Interior alarm sensor button to replace
  • Passenger front seat slide rail cover to replace
  • Passenger door puddle light to replace
  • Reverse lights to re-wire/fix
  • OE CD player to find and fit
  • Window switches are a bit temperamental
  • Tyres deflate every couple of weeks
  • Service
  • Tie rod ends (MOT advisory)
  • Both front tyres (MOT advisory)
  • Both front brake copper piping (MOT advisory)

Few.

Wow it's been a while since I did anything on this!

I bought a Blaupunkt Bluetooth stereo with red/indigo lighting, pulled wiring from the reverse light look - must've been toeing at some point - but it didn't fix the issue.

So I've just replaced the reverse switch on the gearbox, complete arse of a process for something so simple.

And I've just removed the vac pipe from the egr and no engine light as yet. Plugged it with a paint brush end as don't have a screw fat enough!

I don't have any pics as it's been ages lol

Wow it's been a while again. This is probably about the frequency of updates I'll manage as I never have any money to do stuff!

I jet washed it....the paint came off.
I got new tyres....one keeps going down.

But on the plus....I have bought some LCR front end shocks and a full set of 30mm eibach springs, just need rear shocks and I can fit them ready for the TT Quattro front end set up.

Managed to source rack, subframe, hubs, ARB, wishbones with uprated bushes plus the rear 256mm brakes. I'm mega excited about this!
