Has anyone experanced problems with there 1.8t golf, where the car feels really hesitant, and it has no go, i have a passat estate which is also a 1.8t but is by far better / more powerful / free reving engine.

I have it booked in at the dealer for next week for a ounce over on there machine.

Any ideas what it could be would be helpful!

Does the Dump valve make a flutter noise when you change gear? It should be a clean woosh albeit very quiet.

Also could be the MAF sensor, depending on the models you have the Passat one may swap so you maybe able to fault find it that way.

You may find someone with VAG-COM in here in your area that maybe able to plug in and look for fault codes too...

i have the same problem with my gti 1.8t. it seems like the car has no power at all. i get to about 2500 rpm and it revs the engine up high. took it to the dealership and they said nothing was wrong but guess what they are full of. had a previous problem with a vacuum hose or pump and it and ran well for about a week and a half and now the engine lacks power. seems like the turbo is non existent. it seems like we are having similar problems so if i hear anything i will email you and vica versa. good luck

I've had the same problem with my 1.8T for nearly 3 years now.

It's been to 8 main dealers both in the UK and in Italy and none of them could find the fault. They just replaced aproximately ?4500.00 worth of parts (all under warranty I'm glad to say) with no effect.

A few weeks ago I took the car to a back street garage and they found two faults with the car.

First, the Earthing lead below the battery was conneted to a terminal that was painted and hence not making a good earth contact. This he said was the probable cause of all the spurious ECU fault codes that the main dealer using to diagnose the problem.

Second, the ECU was not providing the correct fuel / air mixture (lean) for the engine to run correctly (i.e. Incorrect mapping of the ECU). The way he diagnosed this was to screw a couple of small self tapping screws (or something similar) into the air intake just before the MAF sensor in order to increase the speed of the air passing the sensor. This had the effect of fooling the ECU into thinking more air was entering the engine and therefore increase the amount of fuel.

After these things had been done the car ran perfectly with no problems. The garage is now in the process of getting the ECU remapped in order to provide a permanent solution.

The problems I had with my car may not be caused by exactly the same problems as yours but if they are then VW need to be aware that there may be more cars with incorrectly mapped ECUs.

The fluttering is almost certainly a knackered DV mate.. Mine did that before I swapped it for a forge.. silent now [:D] You can hear the turbo whistling under acceleration.

cheers tylerama... cringing at whats happening to my car really..

the fluttering is noisy (good description btw) which is one thing. But then I have the fact that 3 times in 2 weeks ive gone to put my foot down, revs gone up, turbo has kicked in... speed has stayed the same-ish. slowly it gets better and better ( at times, your revving to gain speed then WOOOOSH everything clicks!- Its V much like a slippy clutch, but it isnt that - for days its fine.)

dya reckon it could be the same thing? Ive not managed to find out if turbo / dump valve just go or could be subject to intermittent probs...

Me too.

Showed it to a friend who is a VW Tec who hooked it up to a VAG-COM unit which came back with the following:

16395 P0011 035

Bank 2, camshaft timing control

Malfunction

sporadic fault

17608 P1200 035

17608 /references

He said this hinted to a problem with the lambada probe but he couldn't give me any more info without booking the car in an diagnosing it further at a cost of ?96p.h

Problem is, based on what I've read here, I'm not convinced they will be able to rectify the problem.

Might have to bite the bullet and book it in!

Well got mine back today. The garage has cleaned up the turbocharger valve, and taken ?25 notes off me... receipt says 1552 fault code interrogation, however I think that is just there code for billing, rather than an error code.

Not convinced its the source of the problem... Will wait and see if the problem reoccurs..

could be the same flutterin, tho mine *seems* to be a bit more intermittent.

Car seems to be running fine. happened once since the last post, again, could have been raining, cant confirm coz the mrs picked me up when I was a little worse for wear!

as a nice little extra the amber exhaust / emmisions warning light (AKA engine warning?) came on after a run to newcastle at the weekend. Its gone off now though :-/ go figure!

Are you talking about the dump valve ? rather than 'cleaning it up' you should just replace it, they only cost around ?25 and should really be treated as a consumable because it is well known that they fail.

..maybe i'll just replace mine with a more durable one, was thinking about doing it anyway.. any sugestions?

Many on here have the forge models. Have a look at forgemotorsport.co.uk for details. They are more expensive, but they are also brick s***houses.. and don't fail like the OEM VW/Audi parts do.
