I have just acquired a set of Porsche 944 turbo (brembo)4-pot calipers at a very cheap price, and was wondering if they are similar to the Boxster caliper. I am considering fitting them to the BOLF. I know that I will require adaptors to mount them, but where can I get these from?

The cars that I have seen fitted with the Porsche Brembo conversion tend to use 993 calipers, so it it just a case of replacing the centres of the disc to match the offset and stud pattern of the golf?

If this is the case, can I just get a machine shop to fabricate a set for me?

I have just had a quote from a specialist for 2 piece disks with custom bells

Thank you for your enquiry.

We would be able to supply a 2 piece disc for this application although I would ideally need to see the calipers and brackets to make sure that the discs would fit and to design the mounting bells to suit. Would you like cross drilled or grooved discs? The price for grooved discs is ?169.68 + vat per disc and the price for cross drilled discs is ?185.59 + vat per disc. To design and manufacture the aluminum mounting bells would cost approx ?70 per bell + VAT but I would ideally need your other parts here so make sure that we get the correct offsets. Our carriage charge to anywhere within mainland UK is ?9.00 + VAT

[:O]

AMD will sell you the bells for the porsche conversion for ?180 + VAT and an engineering firm should be able to sort out the carriers. The discs to go with the AMD bells are ?120 + VAT each

I am currently looking at various size discs to suit my conversion, the replacement discs from Badger Bill for the Brembo Gran Turismo kit are ?88 each + Vat

HTH and doesn't put you off!

Must admit I had the same idea then nearly passed out when I heard the prices!

If you base it around the brembo discs that Bill sells (badger5) and get a local firm to make the carriers, that could cost as little as ?300 + your calipers

If the calipers are similar to those on the leon cupra r, you may even be able to use the 312mm dics from the TT/LCR - not the biggest, but probably the cheapest option. I am still waiting for my calipers (can't say what they are from just yet[;)]) then I'm taking one to try against various disc sizes to see what suits

Let me know how you get on

Cheers

Looking at the euro car parts catalogue, the part number for 944 turbo pads (86-88)is the same as the following:

968

944S2

for the Turbo S and turbo (89-91) they are the same as:

993 95-

996 98-

911 (964) turbo - 91-92

928 S2/S4/GT 86-91

So assuming your calipers are off a Turbo s or later turbo and the same pad reference means the same caliper, AMD's 993 kit should fit - ?249 + VAT for the bells and adaptors and ?120 + VAT for each disc = ?574.58 inc vat

I'm guessing this is still a lot cheaper than the full 993 kit

Am still waiting for the calipers to arrive (bloody slow ebay) but from the pictures I have noticed that the mounting holes for the calipers are different to the boxter ones in that they are similar to the mounting holes on the golf calipers and not at 90 degrees.

If that makes any sense.

What that means is that I can use mounting adaptors that are flat and not angled.

Just received the calipers via post.

They are the older type brembo black calipers with the porsche logo engraved on the outer edge.

Still look very big and are quite heavy.

Can't find a part number, but they are a 2-part caliper with 4 pistons, bolted together with allen bolts and has a solid brake pipe connecting one half of the caliper to the other.

I will have to clean the calipers up (nice of the e-bay seller not to bother) and paint them red and see what they look like.

Will assess how much work and expense is involved in fitting them to the golf and consider fitting or selling (keep an eye on classifieds).

Excellent link, thanks for that mate. Can see this turning into a very expensive mod. Might copy you and go for TT discs, although I dont know how much bigger than the V5 originals they are.

If I go along this route, I will just have to fabricate the flat caliper mounts.

They are Brembo....

Would you like to try and find discs for 993 turbo brakes other than the official discs that come on a 993 turbo and let me know

where to get them...

If it was as simple as brembo making them you'd think that i would be able to find discs through the companies that sell brembo discs for brake set ups but they don't supply a disc for the 993 turbo, wether brembo supply it originally or not.
