I have a MKIV Golf GTi 1.8T and this morning when I started up, the petrol light came on and the petrol gauge was on the red. I put petrol in on Monday, and knew I still had fuel in there. Filled up again twice today, £15 and then another £10, but still hasnt moved from empty and light still on. Had MOT done on Saturday and service on Tuesday, and mechanic mentioned about temperature gauge going up to 90 while driving and then dropping slightly. Any advice?

could be a loose connection if other gauges are working fine

i'm normally the last person to suggest hitting it with your fist but ya never know!!

could be a problem with the sensor in the tank itself though

I have a similar problem. I put £70 of diesel in my Bora 3 weeks ago. The needle showed full......it's still showing full and I drive it every day[whistle]

The mechanic I normally use said he could do a VCDS test as you suggested, as it may be the clocks that are faulty. I hit the dashboard with my fist as suggested [:)].... and the petrol needle went up to 1/3 tank, but the petrol light still on
