which one is faster? totally standard both of them. and with simply just a remap, on both, which one will be faster? also whats the fuel economy normally, and then after you have it remapped? like the differences?

cheers guys

i think im swaying more towards the diesel more, just because i dont wanna have to spend a fortune on petrol, rather spend it on other things, like me car! haha (if the fuel costs were the same i would go for petrol any day because i do like how they sound, and those burbles, ooohhhhhhh so lovely)

but yea like golf mad says, the only true way to know is to test drive them both

i like my diesel pd150 and having driven my bro's 1.8t seat cupra which i think is essentially the same engine i'd choose the diesel

the petrol is a hoot to drive (his is quite mapped up) but the poor fuel economy would make me cry everytime i put my foot down!

with mine, as said, you get 45+ mpg in town with sensible driving, 55 at least on the motorway and even when you give it the beans it never really drops much! oh and i love the torque of the diesel, typical example 6th gear cruising along at 50mph in a avg speed cam zone in cheltenham on the m5, as soon as it finishes, just a light prod of the throttle and back up to 80 in 6th still with hardly any effort

The 1.8T has a quicker 0-60 time. This is achieved because the diesel runs out of puff lower down, meaning you'd lose more time changing gear. Both are 150BHP standard. When mapped, the 1.8T comes out better with 200BHP+ being achieveable, whereas I believe the diesel makes about 175BHP ish on mapping alone.

The bottom line IMO is that petrol is smoother, faster and more tunable, but the DERV is better on fuel at the expense of these things.

before i bought my bora i test drove a 1.8t and an 150 diesel. an i have to say that the 1.8t was slightly better to drive. but one thing you have to ask yourself is realistically how much use is it going to get because if you have a long commute then the diesel is going to be easier on the pocket but if it is only a short commute petrol is cheaper by the litre. But at the end of the day it personal preference mate

Id probly say the 1,8t getting to a certain speed such as 60 as the rev ranges are longer. Diesel wouldnt be very far behind.

Overtaking, id probly say the diesel would have a slight upper hand as the petrol would need to get to boost range depending on how fast you were going proir to overtake, diesel boost would most likely be instananeous.

Never driven them both, so its just a educated guess really.

[:p] lets not let this turn into another never-ending derv vs petrol debate! [:)]

The lad asked which would be faster with a simple remap. Answer: petrol with 200+ bhp most times, vs derv's 185-190ish.

MPG wise? derv will be around double that of the petrol, maybe a little more than that.

Apart from that, not matter how much us derv owners like to think, a well modified 1.8T will always be quicker than our tdi's, but we obviously have them for the other benifits they offer [:)]

You both focus on the BHP figures, not really fair as the diesel is about power, it's about torque. What are the figures for BHP AND torque on these two engines, standard and remapped?

I went for a diesel over petrol as I had an Octavia vRS before the Golf, and it didn't really feel how I was expecting a bossted car to feel, very linear, no kick like my old R5 GTT. Admitedly it was standard so running relativley low boost, but on comparison, I prefer the PD130 lump in my Golf to the 180ghp 20v in the Skoda. On the road, it doesn't really feel noticeably slower, in fact I find the low down torque more useful .

At the end of the day, it's horses for courses, drive them both and see what YOU prefer.
