... when people bid on an item that has like a week left until over !!
Why oh why do people bid so early ... what is the point! Do they think
they are the only person who is interested in the itme ! I just dont
get it ... am I missing something ?

edit : Damn this shouldve been in off topic - got so into the argument I forgot which forum I was in [:p]

If you look at the auction end time, sometimes it will end when you know you are not near your PC (at work, etc) so I will place my highest bid in and wait and see. I have a Blackberry and get updated by e-mail if I win the item or not !!!

Did exactly this the other day and got a set of US spec rear lights for ?46, what a bargain, I think you'll agree.

oh yeh the highest-bidder-first technique makes sense- true say [y]

Making your highest bid and playing the waiting game wouldnt yield the
best results normally - I say normally because I did that once and won
an item real cheap ! [:p]

Yup I guess if someone wants it bad enough they will outbid you but
then thats wht makes auctions good for sellers - sometimes your item
sells at ridiculously high prices ... and low if you didnt set a bottom
limit [;)]

Still think its still to bid before - better than playing the waiting
game is the hiding game ... pounce on it when everyone last expects it
lol

I play both games!

Pouncing doesnt always work though. I had an e-mail from someon who was bidding on something quite rare that I was bidding on for someone else. Literally put the highest bid they were prepared to go to with 5 days left. This bloke then tried to outbid me at the last second and got rather annoyed at me for beating him! I had bid ?266.89 (you know the score with pennies!) and it was at ?67 for ages, then he tried to outbid me at the last second.

He really did think I was rude for bidding earlier and 'holding on to it' lol. Got it for ?180 in the end.

I snipe as well. Its a free internet service whereby you enter the auction number and the highest you are prepared to pay. Say the item starts bidding at ?40 and you are prepared to pay maximum ?80, you enter the details into the system and it will do nothing until the auction has 10secs before finish. It will then automatically enter the next highest bid upto maximum of ?80. So, if the item has only received one bid and is sat at ?45 it will then bid the next highest icrement before the original bidder even has time to even refresh their screen. The plus side is that people tend to have less interest in items that receive no/very few bids and you may catch out the people that are sitting watching the auction waiting for the end.

It doesn't really follow the ethos of fair bidding but it saves you time, money and effort.

I sometimes bid early as a speculative bid. I will lob in a lower than market vale bid very early on as a warning to people that I am serious about the product (even though I am not. For example I would pay ?100 for an item. So I would put a very early bid in a ?50 with a starting price of ?30. That will hopefully put a few otehr early bidders off as I will jump up to ?50, so it shows I am serious and they won't bid.

Sometimes it works other times it does not. I am tight, so I only bid low prices.
