You could try a race tuner such as grant motorsport to squeeze more out of it 'properly' (building the engine - NA style) but it will probably cost loads.
VW stopped calling it a gti in it's last years of production as every motoring journalist slagged off the badge compared to it's previous incarnations. Hence the 2.0's you may have seen. Sorry. In the states they call it a 2.slo.
Sorry mate, on the plus side the MK4 has an excellent cabin quality, and you probably won't lose much if you sell it on (for a gti turbo[^])
