Hey everyone

I have just bought a y reg 2001 golf gti 2.0 8v and i'm a little dissapointed with the performance of the 2.0 litre engine was wondering if any you could give me any advice on increasing my performance (acceleration, power output, etc)

Seriously though. You can go down the exhaust and induction kit route but i don't think you will be able to get massive gains on a 2.0 8v without shelling out some serious cash

so the general consensis is that there is pretty much nothing you can do to a 2.0 engine to make it faster?

i thought 2.0 litres were ment to be reasonably fast but when a 1.6 206 can nearly beat you it's a little dissapointing

If you want performance then your only option would be to sell your current 2.0 and buy a 1.8T.

I really don't know why they ever called the 2.0 8v a GTI.

Also r-r jt, bare in mind that a 206 is made of tinfoil and is alot lighter than your golf.

But i dont think the 2.0 8v is that great an engine anyway.

Have a nosy round the net for options on it, im sure someone has done it. But as a few people have said it will cost you.

If I am not mistaken I believe that there is a supercharger kit available from neuspeed can't remember what power figures it gives mind you.

I'm with Gary on this one. I think it was Eddy who told me that they're only badged 'GTI' in this country. In the rest of Europe it's just '2.0' It's an old, thirsty engine unfortunately.

A mate of mine bought one without really test driving it and I took him out the other weekend in my (Octavia) 1.8T with 4 bar Revo. He was gutted.

You could try a race tuner such as grant motorsport to squeeze more out of it 'properly' (building the engine - NA style) but it will probably cost loads.

VW stopped calling it a gti in it's last years of production as every motoring journalist slagged off the badge compared to it's previous incarnations. Hence the 2.0's you may have seen. Sorry. In the states they call it a 2.slo.

Sorry mate, on the plus side the MK4 has an excellent cabin quality, and you probably won't lose much if you sell it on (for a gti turbo[^])

Awesome have one in the "sale section" of their website, but it is for left hand drive - not sure if it can be modified to suit? If not try GMC motorsport (not sure of website so try google) I spoke to them about supercharging my 2.0 8v cupra a few years back and they could make up kits for most cars....

i think Gary hit the nail on the head. Sell up and buy a car with the performance you want, VW or not. a 1.8T will be a good base to work from but it depends on what you can afford with the purchase and the insurance.

It will cost the best part of 2grand to either turbo or supercharge it and as others have said you could sell up and buy a 1.8t which is a brilliant, fun and highly tuneable engine. Add a remap for 500quid and you'd be looking at over 200bhp [^] !!

That's just my 2ps but iv had my 1.8T with REVO for 6months ish and im still grinning like a child [:I]

cheers for the tips guys i'll be keping that in mind

i think for insurance purposes i'll have to keep the 2.slo for a wee while but i'll be giving a serious thought to an engine swap for a 1.8T in the future

I don't think an engine swap would be economical at all, your car would be worth feck all without its original engine. Insurance may also be a problem.

You would be better changing cars.

Have you tried performanceVWmag.com?? Their forum is very good, and there are quite a few threads relating to tuning the n/a GTI units.
