PD150 2nd Chocolate Cam - always used PD oil !

Me & my Mrs both have PD150's, when I got her car it just had a major rebuild but I think they used the wrong oil & the Cam went, we did about 50 miles to get it home! all the buckets shot & the lobes were round !!

Now my car has the Choc cam! I just replaced the DMF, Clutch & slave a few months ago!

Euro do a kit for £190: Camshaft, Buckets, Bearings, lube & seals.. Anyone used this kit ? Camshaft kits vary from £190 to £500+ what is the real difference ?

Euro also have a Cambelt kit inc Water pump for £105, it's not Dayco which i've always used! any thoughts ?

Cheers

Sounds very cheap price wise to me. When mine went I sourced parts from a local engine repair shop and motor factor and ended up paying, along with a timing kit and water pump, around £400.

I just bought a timing belt kit for my ASZ from ECP. It was the INA brand as recommended by Bobby Singh who really knows his stuff. I also bought the KWP water pump from them. The INA kit came with a new tensioner as well as the bearings etc to make it a complete kit. It cost me £128. Check your chassis number with them to ensure you get the right kit.

Bobby Singh also advised to get the best water pump they did. The KWP one was well made and although it has a plastic impeller, using G13 coolant and de-ionised water will help prolong it's life. Ideally change it every 5 years anyway.

The KWP water pump was far better made than the circolli (or whatever it was called) water pump that had a metal impeller. It was poorly made and the metal material looked brittle. So I still went for the KWP pump.

TPS quote a genuine VW part also uses the plastic impeller so you can buy one from them but you'll pay more and have to pay a surcharge too.

Maybe have a look a Darkside Developments website for a camshaft cost as they will sell them.

I'm currently using a race cam on my car as it's pushing big power but I kept my original cam from my ASZ engine just in case.

I also use Quantum Platinum 5w40 oil as advised by Darkside and change it every 6k.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice people!

Camshafts vary wildly! from £128 ebay to nearly £500 (Darkside) must be some difference in the quality!

I'm hopefully getting Bobby to remap my car once it's back up & running, just changed the DMF. clutch & slave!

Old cars turn into money pits!

I got my quantum for TPS 4 x 5L for £64! always used PD oil, i'm wondering if it got starved of oil ? although it has always been underpowered so may have been going for a while..

Thanks for the Cambelt advice!!
Have you considered a newman cam?
They are good value and i've used them in many cars now without any problems.

Hi Bobby,

I will call them today, not sure if they do a kit... ?

Once I get her up & running again, I need new discs & pads all round + 2 tyres, suspension sorted, then she is ready for the map :0)

Cheers
They will take about 4 days to grind a cam.

I can get them for £330 including followers and postage.

Cheers
