I fear that I am about to fall victim to this deadly disease at some
point soon. I will be getting my mechanic to look at it before buying
parts or anything but I thought I would find out what sort of price I am
looking at for the parts to do this job.

Having looked through a few threads, it would appear that I would need the following:-

Camshaft, Followers (X8), Bearing (X10), Fitted Bolt (X8), Fitted
Bolt (X10), Tandem Seals (X1) and Rocker Cover Gasket (which also comes
with a cylinde head cover).

I rang TPS this morning and they have quoted me £806.81
inclusive of VAT. This is with a discount too so the parts alone would
have cost me nearly £1K without that. The Camshaft alone comes to
£423.28, inclusive of VAT.

Now, is it just me or does that not seem a bit too expensive? I have
heard of other people on here getting the whole job done for between
£800 and £1,000, inclusive of labour. What am I missing here?

Any advice from people who have had this done will be much appreciated.

You could save some more money if you wished. The cam bearings can be purchased from ebay £30, Tandem seal can be cleaned and reused - same goes for the rocker cover gasket (its rubber). The followers need to be INA brand so you dont have to get them from VW ;)

Thanks for the input Bobby.

Are the followers likely to be cheaper than £16.99 + VAT each?

The rocker cover gasket (with cylinder head cover) was £79.72 + VAT. Surely that can't just be a bit of rubber!?!

If you think your cams will go soon, sell the thing, Whats its worth
£4K if you are lucky? Spend a grand or so on the cams and it will still be a high
miler with worn suspension/bushes etc.

What expensive part will break next the gearbox s elector fork or the fans?

Try euro car parts for the follower - should be around 15 inc vat or even less

The cam cover comes with the gasket, but if the gasket which is made from rubber isn't leaking then no need to replace.

Cheers

Also I got my cams from the link below, I couldn't remember the name when I
first posted. I think they were around £300 for the cams and followers.

I have done about 10K on them with no issues. All the other bits and bobs were VW, genuine timing belt kit and water pump at the same time. It was around £950 parts and labour at a reasonably priced VW specialist.

yeah as above where's your morals!
I advised the guy (from experience) to sell up before he spends a fortune, he doesn't actually say his car is in any way faulty. His cams might not actually go for 20000 miles yet.
Still immoral, and whilst they may not go for 20k, they will go at some point, so research isn't a bad idea, hell replacing the items before they fail fully is exactly what i would do if i had a PD150 if i could afford it.

Its immoral to sell your car because you fear the cams may break because you read on the internet that people with similar cars cams broke[6]

Perhaps we could start a thread on the ethics of selling a PD150?

£800 sounds excessive cost for parts to me! Try going through TPS via a local garage and you should find the cost drops, I am sure a while back I got followers for around a tenner + VAT, cam for about £250/£300+vat, and bearings for about £2 to £3 each (you need 10 of them)
