You might be surprised at how much used space on your PC is just temporary files, and not just temporary internet files (which don't really get deleted even if you browse to them through the system folders in the usual way...) but hidden temporary files.

Download Crap Cleaner, www.ccleaner.com, run it and be amazed at how much space it clears. My record is 690 MB on a Windows 2000 file server, just temp files.

I clean my PC out religiously because junk does my head in [:S] Even then I can never find stuff because I have more than one PC and various flash memory cards all over the place! [:D]

Im like that too - just downloaded CCleaner to see what its like - WOW - ive been using A1 privacy eraser for that and scouring and cleaning files myself but it wiped out a load more - Free too - very happy with that - thanks. (bye bye A1 Privacy eraser!)

Other than that I use:-

Kaspersky anti virus

Ad aware

Zone alarm

spybot search&destroy

Ive never had any problems with them.

No probs mate, that PC will fly compared to what you have got now!

As for cleaning it out, I hardly ever do mine and it really annoys me, but I'm one of those who never gets round to these things and can never be bothered to either!

For instance I have a virsu on my PC at the moment and a few spyware bits and pieces that anti-spyware dont seem to be getting rid of, so I just seem to stick with it as I can't be bothered with an XP clean reinstall! Do it all the time as part of my job anyway!

Aye does a get bit boring clean-installing every 6-9 months - next time
you do do it though, get the 90% of the stuff reinstalled and ghost the
system partition - it's much quicker now, takes about an hour to get it
bakc up as was [:D]

And it could be worse Graham - you could be like me and actually START
it - and then not bothering finishing - makes things 10 x worse [;)]

i think im abit anal when it comes to PC house keeping, normally a clean re-install of OS, drivers and software every 6-8 months. I normally try to tie it in with an upgrade... however small. You'd be suprised how much all the crap slows down your system!

Some people think its time for an upgrade because there system is soooo slow and taking ages to do stuff, a fresh install of XP and a good spray dust out can improve system performance and it costs virtually nothing except time...

[:p]

I rely on mine quite abit, and would get annoyed if it broke!

How much?!?!? That's much much worse than the worst machine I've ever seen! [:D]

We need to have a Crap Cleaner league table - person with the most crap wins some UK-MKIVs stickers [:p]

Used this the other day and it removed some of my system tray start up programs such as AVG and Gmail Notifier. Had to re-install AVG as I couldn't find the option to get it to start automatically

Yes you have to be careful of some of these cleaners, esp the registry
ones....they are good at removing rubbish but they also remove relevent
stuff! Most cleanups you can do without such programs, like temp
files,
cookies (some) should also defrag once a month. depends how much cr4p
you have on pc though! get a good spyware... like spybot search &
destroy, stinger also the microsoft free spyware is quite good. and
just cleanup your self regular.
