Been really pleased with my Golf, spent far too much money on but am still getting bored. (I always do !!)

I am considering changing to one of the following, I cover @ 10,000 miles a year and up to yet have never used the back seat but do like 3 doors, budget of about 19K max,30+ yrs old, so opinions please..

Audi A3 2.0TDI Sport ( Nearly new, with Lthr & plan to chip)

Mini Cooper S works (Is this a birds car ?)

BMW 330D

New Golf GTI 3 door (Whats everyones opinion on those seats as lthr is out of budget ?)

If I knew how to set up a poll I would have, any feedback much appreciated [^]

I would say drive them all and see what you think. 10K a year is no real reason to get a diesel so consider petrol varients. I have ordered a new GTI so, I am biased towards that. An A3 sportback also interested me.

I would go for new Golf GTI; great car, great reviews, new model, should have good residuals etc... Only other car I would consider is 330D; but expensive to buy especially consiering new model just round the corner. (I'm not a fan of Minis and don't like the shape of new A3).

I drove a Mini Cooper (cabriolet) around italy last october and it was the most fun I've had in years! Them things hold on to the road like they're glued on - I was driving around the mountain roads at 70+mph!) A Cooper S Works would be amazing.

Having said that, it's small, the seats are uncomfortable and it's not that practical. So get the Audi A3. Or an A4 coz they're lush too!

Last time I worked out the sums, was a few years ago and was on a 523 BMW versus 525d BMW.

But, it worked at about 80,000 miles before you earn you money back by having a diesel.

For you that is 8 years !! Is it really worth paying extra to have a diesel, if you don't do the mileage ?

Thanks all, so 3 votes for the GTI and 2 for the A3, I am swaying towards the GTI as it seems to be the car of the moment but I would get far more kit in an A3 as I could go down the ex demo part used route, a difficult choice as I really do like leather but don't want to pay ?21k for a golf with it included [!]

Other thing to consider is I would like a car where the only mod I would have to consider would be a chip/re-map so again pointing towards the GTI unless the A3 handles as well as my current golf with all the suspension mods, anyone know ?

Budgies right - drive the BMW before you decide, they've got that 'X factor' that just can't be felt by just looking..... ;-) For the same money you'd get a fabulous 330 Sport!

If I want real fun I'll take my BMW for a drive - it's the most entertaining & rewarding car I've ever had!

I would say Golf GTI but that is probably going to be the response from most on here at least.

Mini Cooper works is not a birds special it is a fettled John Cooper BMW backed upgrade, be warned though as it may sound good value but some of the demo cars are fitted with the handling upgrade as well the performance upgrade and from my understanding the handling / suspension upgrade pushes the price over 20k !!!!

If it was my choice it'd be

330d then the new golf gti.

Either will be HUGE improvement on the 150pd as far as enjoyment is concerned. Although yours is modified in the supension dept which is its bigest shortcoming![!]

Any BMW I have driven has been a hoot. Particularly the sports orientated versions. My boss had a nice 323i coupe, last shape and I loved borrowing that! My mum has a Z4 2.5 and thats really good fun[}:)]

just the image/reputation of the drivers that would bother me[V]

Nearly new RX8, high mileage 330d or R32. New Golf GTi is overpriced.

Two flavours of RX8; Std power (192 bhp) and High power (228 bhp).

Used High power ones can be had for ?19K.

I do 10K miles per annum too, and they've been real fun.[:D]

The 330d will be more leggy for that kind of budget, but the R32 would be much better, especially as you don't do high mileage.

Well guys I'm still not sure but out of principle I think the new GTI is going to be dropped from the list, so expensive ! You just don't get enough kit with the standard 3 door IMO.

Been looking on drive the deal and can get an A3 2.0TDI Quattro S-line with loadsa kit (inc half lthr)18" alloys, bose sounds for ?20,985 seems a lot of car for the same price as a standard 3 dr GTI.

Going to have to drive a 330D and A3 back to back but finding a chipped one to drive may be more difficult.

Anyone know the difference between quattro & 4-motion [?]

BMW 330D

A guy i know had his 330D Remmapped with a Tuning box aswell. He said he had around 270-280 bhp with BUCKETLOADS of torque!!!

Apparently the 330Ci's cant touch him!!!
