After my better half manged to kill our Acer Aspire laptop, I've decide to

build myself (between now and Christmas) a decent desktop machine, I thought

something based on an Athon 64 or Dual core CPU and a motherboard

which supports SLI (So i can link a couple of PCI-E graphics cards together).

Problem is, I haven't built one myself for ages, and having the laptop I've kind of

lost track of decent retailers, any recommendations to online places you folks

have bought stuff from for a decent price would be much appreciated. :)

Thanks in Advance.

P.S. By all means recommend a component that you've bought and are more than pleased with too.

I already have Screen, Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers and case (So I've just got the expensive stuff

to get . :)

This is the motherboard I got for a PC I built the other month:-

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe S939 NF4 SLI ATX - Sound 2xgln 1394 USB2 SATA

I'm running it with an Athlon 64 3800+ and 1gb of ram, runs very nicely and is SLI capable, although I'm not running that at the minute. There's also scope to upgrade in the future too.

All bought from Ebuyer.com

www.komplett.co.uk is well priced

^^ motherboard above is fantastic for the money, unless money is no object, then go for a DFI mobo!

Make sure you match the components according, I see so many people these days spec'ing their own systems with either not enuff good branded memory, or a superb graphics card seated in an inferior mobo with low end chip. (or vice versa)

Try to get a well balanced spec, and do some ressearch on what works best with what!

Good luck

ebuyer are great until you get a faulty component, or mis-delivered, then expect long delays, no answer to the phone and poor response to emails....

folding up??? I thought they had just built a large custom made warehouse in Howden, they are relocating near Christmas I think....

It was something my father past onto me so not really using the site at
the moment but will go back in a couple of months see how they are
running...if they are still there then i may use them again.

As for faulty goods or returning goods - Yes they are one of the worst,
took me and my dad a good 2-3 months to return 3 pcimcia wireless cards
as we actually ordered 3 pci wirless cards for the pcs at home even
though it stated the correct goods on the invoice/delivery note[:S]

I have to say whenever I've dealt with ebuyer.com they've been quite quick and dealt with my queries satisfactorily.

However I'm just about to put them to the test as the LCD monitor I got last month has shadows all over the place...

maybe the new warehouse will help resolve this.... but dont bet on it [;)]

My tip is if you have a warranty issue with the hardware from ebuyer, don't go back to ebuyer. Just go straight to the manufacturer, thats all ebuyer do, but you can do it yourself cutting the time.

Ebuyer just ships the stuff, they dont personally give you warranties on the stuff, not even the 'ebuyer' brands as ebuyer do not make their own stuff, it's simply branded stuff without a badge on it!

I'd seriously consider buying from www.casetech.co.uk - its run by my
mate and another fella. They aren't they cheapest (though not far off
really) but they do pride themselves on customer care. This is very
important when it comes to buying components.

As normal, the forum comes up trumps,

Plenty to get on with there then! lol

(Wow Spud, I hope there isn't some kind of test at the end of that lot! )

Thanks people.

Scan is very local to my parents and though they offer good prices I've
found their customer care to be terrible. I've had a couple of issues
with them and they weren't dealt with satisfactorily. Ebuyer are also
notorious for poor customer care.
