driving to pick someone up 2nite the car just turned itself off while i was driving (about 30-35mph) BRAKES DIDN'T WORK and STEERING GOT LOCKED[!][!][!]

i had to use the handbrake to stop somehow. turned back on and everything seemed to be fine, its driving normally. i wouldn't be sitting here writing this thread if that happened on a motorway or something. has anyone had this before[?] i am a bit worried about my car now[B)][:(]

do not turn key whilst driving, this will cause power loss. always wait until the vehicle is stationary! :)

i was tryin to find my bloody handbrake let alone the keys[:I]

i remember in my old car i used to accelerate then turn the engine off and see if i could perfect the cruise to my gate. Did it in the golf one days and proper pooed myself when i couldnt turn round the bend or brake and also lucky it was a big grass area and at 3am.

Yes. Mine used to do it all the time. You'll come to know when it's going to happen, I got my first of the winter yesterday as it happens and knew it was going to do it before it actually did. Luckily I was coasting into the slow lane of the dual carraigeway from a filter after roadworks, just flipped the engine while coasting and it came back up fine.

Anyway, I had it hooked up to vag com twice last year and no error, cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner and it was fine thereafter, until now - will give it another clean soon. I'd suggest you do the same.

I had that on my 99 my 1.8T, happened at various speeds, the worst was on the D/c at 70 (honest officer!) i tried allsorts, from power supplies to the ECU, various realys, (VW diagnosed the fuel punp relay charged me ?100 to diagnose, fit and supply, then the car died about 100 yards from the showroom.

Took ages to sort, it turned out to be the Chip carrier in the ECU, a dry solder joint, took it to Autotechics, and left it, came back 2 days later, replaced FOC.

scary wasnt in it, the steering became keep fit, the brakes useless.

Sorted now though.

My V6 did this to me once ages ago, and it hasn't happened since. Trouble was, I was on the M6 doing 90mph in the middle of the night at the time! Boof! Everything off, lights, engine, radio, heater, instruments, everything. Almost crapped myself! Pitch-black and no lights! Did the instinctive thing, and turned the key and boosh, everything's back on again. Never seen my car go from 0-90 on the speedo so fast in all my life! It's never happened since, fingers crossed...

This used to happen on our old MKIV 1.6 work car. It used to happen on the motorway at 70-80mph once or twice a week. It went back to the dealers 4 times and they never found a problem. After the 4th time and the dealer sending it back with the speedo and odometer overreading by 20% we sent the car back to the lease company saying that it was too dangerous to drive. We found that after it cut out, you had to wait for 10 mins it to sort itslef out, then you could drive normally.

Do Golf's suffer from icing in the intakes in cold weather ? My Scirrocos used to stall due to icing in the carb - could this be a factor ? I am guessing that turbos don't suffer from this due to the heat generated during the charge compression.

i think a slightly milder version of this has been happening to me recently.

Not occured at any great speed as it has happened twice after just leaving home in the morning. Not stalled just everything off!!!! Comes straight back up when i restart.

It's going into VW tomorrow for service and MOT so i will ask them about it.

BRAKES DIDN'T WORK

The brakes will lose power assistance when the engine stalls as there is no vacuum from the engine (or vacuum pump on a diesel).

The brakes will still work but you have to stamp on the pedal f*cking hard, it's scary - I had this when my vacuum pipe split.

Mine used to do that. V scary the first time, but you do kind of get used to it! My 1.6 had to have a new temp sensor and new throttle body to fix it, cleaning didn't work. Think it was the temp sensor causing it to cut out though. I just used to bump starting it while still roliing!!
