As the title suggests I've lost fifth. Had a look at the rods/parts connecting to the top of the box and things seem to be in order. Thing is I don't really know what I'm looking at or how it works 😂

No grinding or trouble with any other gears. It's as if fifth doesn't exist. Lever won't go to the right to locate it.

Changed the gearbox oil which was a bit low and old but no lumps of metal came out so I guess that's a good sign.

Is it likely to be something within the actual box?

Cheers in advance

in most cases on these cars it's either the gearstick that needs new bushes, alignment or the gear selector cables cables need alignment.... rarely it's the gearing inside the gearbox. most garages can help you out within 30 minutes. (they'll still charge you a full hour though)

have a look here if you want to check yourself (i did select the polo as that is what the caddy is based on now i'm not sure if it's the mk4 or the mk5 polo but if you got a 6 speed gearbox than you need to go back to the main page select VW, scroll down to Polo and select the mk5)

Sailed through the MOT! The mechanic had a look and there's a lot of slop in the linkage but he still couldn't engage fifth by hand. Looks like it's a box off job/salvaged box on.
