I have seen them around but can't remember their technical name. Basically plug it obd port and after a journey connect the obd to a computer and it logs any issues like dropped revs etc.

Dropped revs?

Why not just use VCDS if you are datalogging looking for an issue?

Because having a laptop sliding about in your car 24/7 isn't always convenient. The OBD data recorders (they can be found with a Google search, try the brand Creaders) are the size of an OBD dongle so don't get in the way of anything.
That's correct imagewerx. I can't take a laptop everywhere I go hoping for an issue to arise. I have an issue which is intermittent and doesn't always happen so a laptop is not practical.
Are they just called obd2 data recorders?
That recorder just does generic OBD 2 labels
You can log all sorts using the torque app.. can even relate it to a map which might help in pinpointing an issue
