If your after an independant, I'm sure I've heard of a garage in smogland called volksworks. theres 2 next to each other that are independant for Vw's. I'm still under warranty, so dealers for me. If its any good, let me know, and I'll go there next year[:D]

Heres another Ron Turnbulls in Mboro phone 01642 248848

Pulmans in Durham... its the only decent one in the North-East.

Stay well clear of Mill in Sunderland and any of the Benfield franchises. I've had bad experiences with Benfield, and have lads at work who never have a good word to say about Mill.

I've used Oxford Garage in Hurworth for the 70k service on my old A3 earlier this year. I think that their labour rate is about a third of the main stealers and they use genuine parts.

You can take your car anywhere for service..

Chris
Yes but I was under the impression that you have to use authorised vw dealers until the warranty expires.

I didnt realise that non-franchised garages will do warranty work for you either[;)]

I used mill at sunderland and had no problems with them , gave me a new exhaust under warranty without any hassle, didnt even know I needed one when I took it in.

Ive had mixed service at mill sunderland ;

Good one:

paid just ?45 to fit a new passenger window pack and completely sorted
mess i made of door trim etc after my earlier attempt to fit parts
myself, (and fully valeted car inside/out for seemingly no extra
cost)

The poor one:

Annual service in aug 04 was accompanied with the mandatory list of
their "strongly recommended fixes due" such as new exhaust and 2 rear
tyres even tho ive since done another 15k on same origional parts and
passed 2 mot's and had no prev probs!plus didnt reset service light.
Annnnddd mysterious occasional engine idle/judder/stalls occur
sporadicly ever since the service (that they cant appear to fix) even
tho car was trouble free 2 years prior to their visit!!

Might have been the case years ago, but not any more. I just take mine to a local garage I trust, and any faults found I just book in to VW to have the parts fitted...

Best VW by far is Carrs of Hexham,  Benfield at Newcastle are terrible and Pullman couldn't find a hose that was hanging off, useless!!

You cant take it ANYWHERE... you have to take it to a VAT Registered garage and they MUST use OEM parts or parts of an equivalent quality. It was a rule called Block Exemption that was brought in so you could keep your warranty intact without using a main dealer for servicing all the time.

Yes by "Anywhere" I was meaning reputable garage, somewhere youve used before and trust, if you dont know anywhere then perhaps VW Pulmans is your best bet..

Most garages with any kind of turn-over are VAT registered. When my car showed up on the VAG computers as being warranty invalid, I just phoned VW Customer Services and told them it had been serviced by someone else and the guy on the end of the phone just tapped a few keys and re-validated it, I want required to send any proof... Dont suppose thats the way it always is though..

A guy I used to work with did, they told him he needed new brake pads in his Polo, which Pullman's checked afterwards and told him they were only half worn. He'd also let them replace a blown headlamp bulb which they managed not to fit correctly. So on that basis I wouldn't recommend them.
If you're in Darlington, why not try Oxford Garage at Hurworth?
I've used them myself and they seem pretty good.

I have to agree with ExAudiSi. I bought my GT TDI from lookers/mill in Darlington and I would never recommend them to anyone

I was going tobuy my car from lookers in darlington (called mill at the time) but i herd nothing but bad things about them.

I eventually went to pullman, cant fault them that much, but the service team dont always find the fault first, second or third time After the problems i had with my original MKV, the service team are very nice to me, always get a golf/golf+ etc as a curtosy car as i need one simialr sized with 5doors and genralyy quite good for a stealer!

A friend goes to oxford specialist, but they didnt fit the engine cover underneath the car properly and had it fall off while driving through darlington!!

Also theres alot of memebrs on here from this part of the world!!

Agree that Carrs are by far the best VW dealer - unfortunately they are now part of the Benfield group but up to now they somehow seem to have avoided going down to the same appalling level as the rest of the group.

Tatally agree with Rxtdi. Nothing seems a problem for carrs, when my Anni alloys coroded I thought I would be up for an argument, they didn't look at them and said its a common fault I'll order you some now. Not many garages would do that.
