Gents - my Nokia 6230 is working fine with the VW telephone pre-wiring + VW phone cradle (besides the annoying rattling noise and high-line computer doesn't show the telephone menu item), in my golf mkv. Recently upgrade to 6230i, just found it doesn't work! I always thought 6230 and 6230i would be compatible on everything, but when the 6230i is in the phone cradle, the phone keeps poping up "USB cable disconnected" message once per second, and when dialing out - the MFD2 doesn't switch to the telephone.

Has anyone been using 6230i on VW telephone pre-install? Is there a software upgrade required? or does it actually require a different cradle? (the 6230 and 6230i are identical in size and pin outs)

Thanks gents

I have called "Club Nokia", they think it is the VW car software is not compatible with 6230i. They said although 6230 and 6230i are very similar, but the software are different, so if the VW car kit was designed for 6230, it may have a problem with 6230i. Have to sell the new phone now....

Tried to find on the internet, and found the Nokia 6230i has software problems. The latest firmware version is 3.30 (by pressing *#0000# on your phone to check the version), not only it doesn't work with VW phone pre-wiring, even the Nokia's own bluetooth handfree doesn't work. Now we are waiting for Nokia to solve this software problem. (I found in www.expansys.com, from the Nokia user forum)

If you are looking forward to sign another contract phone, check internet to see if it works!

Hi there, I have exactly the same problem. My phone is an Orange 6230i and I have a MK V golf with the VW telephone pre-wiring kit (6230 cradle) and and MFD-II. I have spoken to Orange, Nokia and VW, all of which are blaming the other! Typical!

Orange have advised that the problem is to do with the VW kit, and that I should buy a Nokia CK-7W bluetooth kit. Firstly this leaves my expensive VW kit redundent, secondly I have read on the expansys forum that even that has problems, and thirdly, its even more money spent...

VW are completly clueless! I can't find anyone in VW UK that even knows what the VW pre-wiring kit and cradle look like little own know how to upgrade the MFD software! All they can sugest is that the phone can't be compatible with the 6230 cradle. Also, does anyone know why the Telephone option doesn't display in the MFD-II menu? VW, have said that the UK model doesn't support this option? As I said, I think they are clueless, and will say anything to get rid of you...

Nokia have blamed the Orange software on the 6230i handset.

I am at a complete loss with this, and feel I should try and get my old 6230 fixed to save the hassle, but this seem counter-productive as it is an old model that will one day no longer be supported by Orange support, and secondly, why should I !???

Any help or advice greatly received!

Hello again,

I have just been searching the web regarding this problem. I have found some info on the expansys forus sugesting that there is a firmware update 3.46 available for the 6230i from UK Nokia service centers. This firmware update fixes some issues with car kits. You can find your current firmware level by typing *#0000# on your handset. (Sorry if you already knew this!)

I am going to contact a service center tomorrow for more advice, and I will update this forum when I have found out more.

Thanks...

This is why I never get a factory fitted phone kit. They're not
only unsightly and expensive but they're always out of date and
incompatible by the time they hit the market. I've got the Nokia
Bluetooth kit and it has now been in 4 cars and worked with 5 phones
from Nokia, SE and Motorola without problems

Interesting point, and duely noted....

As a bit of background, the VW telephone prep was sold to me by the dealer as having a ton of great functionality. The first and foremost of which was the capability to make and receive calls from the indicator stalks on the drivers console, in conjunction with the on board computer display of the MFD-II. ie The on board computer would read the memory of the phone and/or the SIM and display the contact telephone numbers stored within.

This was frankly a load of rubbish !!!

In reality all the telephone prep does is exactly what it says on the tin... 'Pre-wiring preparation for the ariel, mic and audio'

To make it work with a phone, you have to buy a cradle at an extra cost of ?150. Once fitted, all the kit does is allow handsfree conversation after the stereo mutes when the phone rings... GREAT!

I am told the European version of the telephone kit does what the dealer told me, but this apparently is not an option in the UK, and hence why the telephone menu does not appear in the drop down list on the MFD-II.

Bearing in mind that the telephone prep was ?250 + the cradle ?150... That makes it a ?400 car phone...

If the VW kit did what I was told it could do, I wouldn't mind, but ?400 quid for the same functionality as a standard Nokia kit albeit a bit nicer looking is simply a joke as the Nokia kit is sub ?100 fitted...

I have complained to VW, and received an ?100 compensation cheque, but I am more annoyed by the fact that the dashboard has now been drilled, making it pointless to go and have a bluetooth kit fitted and leave the cradle redundant.

In an ideal world, the 6230i would work with the VW kit, you would be able to make and receive calls from the console and if you changed your phone, you change the cradle.... Simple! Not for VW or Nokia!

In my opinion, VW sales staff are not well enough informed by their employers... If they had been, I wouldn't be in this mess...

Sorry for the rant, I just don't wany anyone else to fall foul of this problem.

Hello

Please read my previous thread regarding Telephone and the MFC. I have upgraded my 'Telephone Preperation' to the 'Full Telephone' which works on the Highline display and stearing stalk with the Nokia 6310i. I also got a refund from VW as it did not do what I thought it would do, read the tread below for full details:

http://www.uk-mkivs.net/forums/244335/ShowPost.aspx

To get this to work you need a Nokia 6310i as detailed in the Handbook, a new Nokia interface box (Which is under the carpet under the drivers seat) and a new cradle specifically for the Nokia 6310i (part numbers in my previous posts). The new parts were very expensive but it is a very usefull too to have. See the pictures in my post of one in German. Mine works in English and if anyone would like a PDF of it working then please mail me as I dont have anywhere to host it.

Damain who is a regular poster on this forum has also done the upgrade. As for the 6230i I do not know. The german VW accessory site http://www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de/ is a good place to look for phone cradle information, click on 'Handy-Einbau' on the left and you can get a list cars and you want Golf mj>04 and then you get a list of PDFs which contain all cradles for the Golf. Whether these work with the Highline display like mine I do not know but no doubt a new interface box may be required aswell.

Good Luck

Paul,

Many of us already called VW customer service and got the VW phone pre-wiring refunded. They didn't refund the cradle as it is still a working hand-free, just not as good. If you have not done that, give them a call now to get your ??? back.

My 6230i is from Vodafone, so I don't think it has anything to do with Orange. If I take the MMC out from the phone, I will receive a different message when I put the phone in cradle. I am still using my old 6230, at least it works. Currently Vodafone has promised to upgrade the phone firmware for me once it's available, otherwise I will be selling it on ebay.

UK spec has no steering whel control and the centre red LCD does not work with phone is very "?$%^ !! The phone vibration on 1300 rpm is another "?$%!! But luckly besides that my car has no any other problem. knock-knock-knock...(besides it secretly drank one full bottle 1L of oil one day last month - not a big problem, as others seem to have the same symptom.)

As others have asked and mentioned, my 4 months old car may lost a lot of money for me (with all the options I have), I better keep it for another two years before thinking to change. Any one can't bare the long wait for a new car? Drop me a line....

Hello. I've got a new Passat with MFD2 and based on the advice on this site I didn't bother with the VW telephone prep (there will be a VW Bluetooth interface option from early next year, but it wasn't available when I ordered my car).

I will be installing a Nokia Bluetooth car kit and wondered whether the VW interface box of tricks would work with this, allowing use of the highline computer to view call details etc.

Anyone know?

Thanks

The UK part number for the interface box is 1KO 035 729 E - this allows the stereo to be muted and thats about it.

The German part is 1KO 035 729D - this allows the call details to be displayed on the highline computer. Also, it shows that you have a text but you need to "see" the message on your phone. UK dealers are not aware of this. As far as I know, only DaveL and myself have had this interface box installed. And it works.... to the amazement of VW

I have a 6310i for use with this German box - I do not know if it is compatible with the 6230i
