Can anyone help or have an idea whats going on with my car Ive had for 3 f**king weeks []

Driving along the motorway today towards Manchester for a bit of shopping, and it felt like someone had jumped under the bonnet and ripped out the Turbo!! I felt a lull in power so I put my foot down, and.............nothing! nothing at all, apart from a VERY slow increase in speed. No warning lights, like in limp mode, nothing!

Got to Manchester, parked up and went shopping. Back in the car, started up, and WHOOSH! Full power again! Great I thought. Then, about 15 mins from home, on the motorway, again, a drop in power and it wouldnt pull. Got onto the M58, and while it was quiet, I pulled into the inside lane and switched the ignition off (without the steering lock coming on by the way) and then switched it back on a bumped it, and WHOOSH, full power again. FFS I thought. Then 2 mins from home, f**k all power again.

Anyone got any ideas as to WTF is going on?????

I've just got back form driving to newquay for the weekend, 250miles each way. My TDI (115) did exactly the same, twice on the way down, twice on the way back. Restarting the ignition always brought the power back. Very weird, very annoying. I've only just bought the car and am still getting to know it so no idea what might be causing this.

Would realy appreciate hearing how you guys get on resolving this.

Also, does anyone recomend a good VW specialist in the Bucks, Aylesbury area?

Many thanks

Nope, not had it mapped, (YET)

seems to be a common problem though. Suprised no one has come up with the answer!

Will keep you guys posted

Hi Guys, just throwing my experience with this problem, have a Bora 115, replaced the MAF, the N75 no joy...even took it to VW..who said it was the Turbo needed a replacement for arounf ?1K + vat...told them to do one. A mate with VAG com diagnosed it and found it was a leak in the hose.....took ages to find very small. So anyway will be replacing that hopefully this week...will let you know if it sorts it...

cheers

Cheers Akhtar. Just spoke to Dubsport and they said it "could" be the MAF. But I think its a bit of red herring, as everyone who's had this replaced, have had no changes to the fault! The pipe thing sounds plauseable, but its weird how it resets after the ignition is turned off and on! Seems more electrical in my case. Anyhooo, their gonna stick it on the Diags on Wednesday, so I'll keep you all informed.

I THINK IVE FOUND THE PROBLEM!

Had mine in another garage today, this time a vw specialist, and a friend. He's found a fault with one of the actuator solenoids for the turbo. I think theres 3 of them and hes just figuring out which one it is thats playing up. Its an intermitant fault thats why you get your power back if you turn the engine off. Im replacing it myself as its an easy job so that should sort it.....i hope

Hello gents,

I had this problem for like 6 months, started doing it once in a blue moon ended up every piggin time I went on a motorway, I wouldnt make it up the slip road in most cases near the end!!!

If you do a search for 'PD115 limp mode' I have quite a few threads discussing my problems, I spent almost 6 months looking into every possible cause.

First took it to VW who told me I needed a new turbo and they had checked all the hoses etc Wasnt 100% convinced by this so decided to start saving just incase and see how I went.

Now my car normally has all its work done at a specialist (dubsport funnily enough) and when I took it in for its next service I asked them to get to the bottom of it didnt care if I needed a new turbo just sort it!

They found the problem and it was a split hose, from the actuator wastegate I think, turns out there must have been a hole in this pipe since I got it as there is pretty much no lag at all now and it was always a bit laggy even before it started going into limp mode. It also smokes much less now too.

I had read many a horror story about sooted up turbo vanes on the 115 turbos and some people even suggesting it was a design fault it was that common. But I couldnt see how that would be intermittent, added to this when not on the motorway I could rag my car as hard as I liked and it only ever went into limp mode once in this senario.

Basically get someone who knows what there doing to look at the car and firstly check all the pipework as this is the most likely cause especially if its intermittent as mine was.

I find a good tell tale sign of the problem I had was when booting it in first. It felt like there was no power till about 3k then a sudden rush, emphasied even more when the car was cold. It was making pulling out of side roads a dangerous business as I would have hardly any power then a sudden rush before I had to change gear. Thought this was a characteristic of the 115 but how wrong I was.

Cant recommend dubsport enough

Update:

My car went to Dubsport for the suspension work, and while it was there, they looked at it.

Mark said the Actuator was stiff, so he freed it up and I think it deffo feels better. Seems more responsive and on a trip to Bolton, didnt fail once. So here's hoping. He said the actuators can seize intermitantly.

Good luck sorting yours

Thanks Paul

I've made no progress in sorting mine yet but at least now I have a list of things to ask the garage to check.

Good to hear yours seems to be running fine.

Happy motoring.

Mine was the same, that was the only fault coming up. So i bought a new one from vw and fitted it myself (dead easy) and it now smokes way way less and turbos coming in at the right time etc, so i think thats done it!

Update:

Fault is STILL there [:(] Did it again last night! I wonder if the actuator is sticking again. I switched the ignition off and back on, whilst doing 80 [:O] and it started boosting again.

Hi Paul,

If it did feel better at first when the actuator was loosened then you may be better buying a new one of these and fitting it yourself?

Imtermittent problems are a right sh*t!!

I probably will do mate, BUT! How much are they, and are they easy to fit. Im not too bad with a spanner, but I wouldnt wanna start stripping major components off the car.
