Hi guys, just like to introduce myself.

Currently driving a 330d but after a good test drive decided to take the plunge and order a new GTI. Spec is 3 door, diamond black (originally ordered red but changed due to family pressure), centre arm rest with CD and 18" alloys. I would have liked more options but was right at the limit of my budget. I ordered the car two weeks ago and was told delivery would be early to mid May but as yet have heard nothing from the dealer.

I have to say what really impressed me about this car was the in gear performance. It feels quicker 50 to 70 in 6th than my 330d which is saying something. It is also nice to be able to rev to 6500 rpm again.

I do have a couple of questions if anyone can help.

1.) Has anyone drove a car on both the 17" and 18" rims and able to comment on how much the ride deteriorates. I have just seen a GTI in a showroom in Morpeth with 18" wheels and have to say they look stunning.

2.) Also what does it say about the running in procedure in the manual. We have to go to Newquay at the end of May, which from Newcastle is a 1000 mile round trip so this could prove ideal.

Hello.

Can't help with any of your questions, but I am also looking to order a GTI with 18's and the armrest (no CD changer).

Did you manage to get anything off list, or a decent trade-in price for your car?

Hi Mike,

Couldn't get the dealer to budge on list price or throw in any options. Best he could do if I didn't trade in would be a full tank of fuel. The trade in offered on my 330d was worse than useless. The car is currently valued at ?9900 with 76k on the clock, but the best he could offer by ringing a few used car dealers was ?7700 (for May). I didn't expect anything of the GTI so I wasn't dissapointed and I will try and sell my car privately.

Speaking to the dealer today, he said he can't take any more orders until March so there's certainly no incentive for them to do a good deal.

Hi Steve

Welcome to the forum.

I have driven both the 17" and the 18" back to back and must say didn't notice any difference in the ride.

In the flesh I thought the 18" looked much better and have ordered them as well [:D]

Congrats on the GTI order!!! I went for the 18s as well without even seeing them! Everyone in my family wanted me NOT to get black as I have a black mkiv at the moment, but I didnt bow to pressure. I was very tempted by steel grey and especially white. White looks amazing when it is clean and really stands out. Where I park at work though, the relative subtlety of black will hopefully mean that it won't get nicked. I was initially told march, latest april when I ordered near the end of January. The stealer has since told me that it will be more like May.

He even joked that it may even be June. I didnt see what was funny.

I really stretched beyond my budget when I specced my options. The thing is, I would end up just spending the same (or similar) money on mods etc so figured I would spec the car to a good level. I now feel that, sound system aside, I could live with this car for a good while.

Anyway, my dealer said that I wouldnt need to run-in the engine as newer cars are already run-in during testing. Personally, I will be keeping the revs well away from the redline for the first thousand miles. Hope you dont have to wait too long for the GTI.[:)]

That will be one very high spec GTI when you actually get it!! You probably ordered about the same time as me, but I guess from your comments that you don't have a build date yet. My dealer said it would take 1 to 2 weeks for a build date, but I've heard nothing yet.

I actually saw a diamond black GTI today in a showroom and it looks superb. Haven't seen white yet, but would be a gamble I think.

nice one VW r32. Hope that march/april delivery date is on the cards. My dealer was pretty certain initially but when he was on the phone to VW to change my order (to add xenons[:D]) he indicated it might be april/may. Doc (forum member) has had a bit of hassle getting a straight answer from VW about his GTI delivery and it seems that certain specs (such as DSG, 18s?) may cause delays but to me it seems an almost random process. Lets just hope these gits dont sell our cars to someone who walks in with cash on the day when they arrive. (have heard of this happening). Also glad to hear you say diamond black in the flesh (metal?) and liked it.

If you see the words used "pretty firm answer". As i say still no build date, and its just their words.

Like you say, hope all goes to schedule. The wait is so agonising!!! Especially with the R32 gone aswell!!!

Why do dealers often say this[?] Even if they were right they really should be telling you what it says in the manual.

Engines may or may not be run in the factory but no way are they run for the 1000miles or so it says in the manual.

Congrats on your car BTW - black is a good choice [8D]

Steve,

I can answer both questions for you.

First of all the book says for running in do not exceed 3/4 of it's max speed and do not use full throttle that is it.

Having driven the test car on 17s and mine has 18s there really is not much noticable difference. The ride firm as you would expect but you do not feel it harsh when driving around. I think getting them was the best decision I made, they make the car.

See Wish's car below it looks well smart.

I am well happy with the car

according to VW all gti's could take 12 - 16 weeks !, i ordered in late november and only have a provisional build date of 2nd week in march, read into this what you can about your own deliveries but don't expect it soon !. However VW told me they would lend me a car if it went over 16 weeks !, if it goes over 16 weeks something is very wrong, 1/3 of a year to get a golf, nightmare.[:(]

I ordered mine on the 04/11/04 and I have a week 3 build date in March, my spec is red, 18", winter pack 2, Lux pack, 6 cd + arm rest, rear parking sensors and full size spare alloy.

Your right it is a joke for a golf, I havebeen carless since November and it's driving me mad. Brought a new 325ci sport convertible 2 years ago and that was built faster then this and they are made to order [}:)]

Oh well, hopefully next month I will be the proud owner of a shiny new golf gti
