Anyone seen autoexpress this week?

Speaks of the worlds first 'turbocharged supercharger' in a 1.4 168bhp Golf GT.

240Nm of torque and 0-60 in 8 seconds. Also has the GTI style front grille.

AUTOEXPRESS is the equivalent of the SUN newspaper - utter trash. (apologies to the 5million SUN readers)

The real downer would be that, even if VW put it into production, the cost would be much nearer the GTI. Or even technically be more expensive, but sold as a loss leader or with lower margins etc.

A Supercharger and a Turbocharger = big bucks!!

I dunno so much. I think its clever marketing.

People said the same when VW released the original Polo G40. Only a 1.3 with a super charger than was faster than the equivalent Golf GTI!!

Price will be the issue. But I can see it appealing to a lot of buys who think the GTI is a bit of an old mans car. Would be interesting to see what Insurance group and tax bracket it falls into aswell.

There are a couple of Focus's running around with superchargers and turbos on them, the advantage is that with a supercharger the power is instant but with turbos there is some lag. By combining the two the supercharger makes up for the turbos shortfall. Having said that I think the Focus just runs the turbo now and I think she still has the NOS on it.[:D]

Apparently its only a little less economical than a TDI. But 168 bhp
from a turbod supercharged 1.4 engine is still a little reserved.A
decent turbo and map on a 1.4 should see in the region of 170bhp anyway
but it will be a little laggy so i can see the reason for the SC to be
added.

I recon if this engine was produced it should be put in the Lupo GTi.Now that would be fun.Id buy one

I can see this car being great in winter when the air is cold and dense, but with compression from both turbo and SC, temperatures will rise and in hot weather, the electronics will back it all off to avoid detonation.

No that shouldnt be an issue.I guess thats also another reason why the
power is so reserved, so that constant power figures can be maintained
all seasons.Rather than have a balls out version that couldnt handle
hot weather.

An example was i read somewhere that the 1.8t runs more boost in hot
weather than in cold so that you get the same power no matter what the
climate is.

I dont see the logic, would be fun mind... if i had one, there would be a 1.4 badge on the back [;)]
170 bhp in a 1.4 engine= less weight. That thing will probably rev like
a motorbike.I recon this engine will find its way into the lupo.

this is going to be an interesting one [:D]

This months volkswagen driver contains an article from a vw dealer about it too.  They had noticed a funny engine had appeared on their ETKA, and asked them via the letters page what it was.. the editorial comment (Neil Birkitt, I assume ?) says that they have information that it will exist too.  a supercharged 1.4. with 170 ps, so 168 bhp. am sure it was a 1.6 and not a 1.4 though.  Either way, sounds interesting !

I cant see how this engine is going to line up with the rest of the range. Reading the blurb, its going to have near GTI power, but with near TDI fuel economy, correct? Then surely this is going to take sales away from other cars in the range. Maybe we will see some models being dropped? As for the insurance, as soon as the companys realise the power it will still go into group 15 or so despite the low capacity. Look at the RX8, its only a 1.4 or something due to the rotary engine.

But the rx8 they classify it as a 2.6l on the insurance if you ever try and get a quote.
