Sorry this is a bit lenghty, but you need the details to help work out what the issue can be, please bare with me this is starting to do my nut!

On buying my 150 middle of last year I have had the "Emission Workshop" message and EML on constantly! After owning the car for two days it was back under warranty having glow plugs replaced due to the warning coming up on the dash and the garages very basic code reader saying Glow Plug No.2 and 3 are faulty, even though they were meant to have been replaced as part of a full service as part of the sale! Anyway after a few weeks and a few hundred miles the same thing comes up again, so its back again getting new glow plugs under warranty. Once more fine for a few hundred miles before the EML is on again!

So searching through the paper work on the car, it turns out Glow Plug/Cylinder 2 was frequently replaced and had issues, even though its had FVWSH what ever the problem was it was never found or corrected. After finding a local member of this forum with VAGCOM and getting the code: 17056 / P0672 - (Cylinder 2 Glow plug circuit (Q11)) its narrowed down to needing a new Glow Plug Harness and not the actual plugs them selves.

Unable to afford the new harness at the time, bad whether and knowing that the plugs are fine i get the EML switched off and for a month its all good. Until the cold weather hits us and the EML is back on with "Emission Workshop" message. So over the Christmas period i get everything ready for a 6000k mile service and have spent this weekend changing oil and filter, pollen filter, fuel filter, air filter, removing and cleaning EGR valve and pipes, putting in the new harness and yet again another set of glow plugs but the EML and "Emission Workshop" message are still on!!!

Now i know from my very basic experience that the EML warning will be logged into the ECU so is it as simple as i need it cleared in VAGCOM to find out the problem is fixed or am i facing another problem thats has been over looked so the light is going to stay on?

Lastly the NGK glow plugs i used to replace the old NGK glow plugs that we in the car were 2mm short then the ones they replaced, they also had different part numbers on - this plugs were shown on the GMF data bases as the ones needed for the ARL engine so would that have an effect? The car starts perfectly fine and runs smoothly, theres a small amount of smoke on start up but less then before the service.

Anyone one with an ideas what to do next? I have emailed the the member with VAGCOM for help but not heard anything back yet.

I have seen this problem many times if the incorrect glow plugs or aftermaeket ones are fitted.

If you have replaced the loom then it could be the plugs you are using ar ethey from the dealer?

TBH if was a wiring issue i would expect you to see the issue more often rather than every month, my advise is to find yourself i DECENT garage who are capeable of working the problem out methodically

BlackMagic: GMF = General Motor Factors (www.gmfmotorfactors.co.uk) my old man used to work with the owner of the local outlet so i get everything at trade, normally on the ball and never had a problem with their parts - until now?

Motionlee: The original plugs that were being replaced after the very first time this happened after i bought it were VW branded.

The car had full VW service history when i bought it - the issues must have been there before as the glow plug in cylinder 2 was replaced twice times in one year (not including the usual service) according to the invoices i have, thats why i had someone run VAGCOM on it.

The code that came up (see my original post) came up on a few forums and almost everyone said it was the glow plug ignition harness being faulty which is why i replaced it - i just expected the light to go off once i had as the suspected faulty connection was taken out of the loop and it had x4 new plugs. [:(]

Im having it put on the diagnostics again on thursday to see what error has appeared, then more then likely it will be given to one of the VAG specialists by me to fix.

Mine just said glow plugs were faulty tested them and found they were ok i checked the wiring and found nothing wrong. The relay is located near pollen filter under plastic housing. Maybe replace that thensee what happens

Had the car on VAGCOM end of last week and got the code:

17057 / P0673 code (Cylinder 3 Glow plug circuit (Q12))

I dont understand why, i have changed all plugs and the harness after repeatedly getting the original fault code: 17056 / P0672 code (Cylinder 2 Glow plug circuit (Q11)).

I have had the code cleared for now incase its just stayed on cos the error was logged and thats why the EML light stayed on, so far its not returned. But if its does re-appear, apart from the relay im out of ideas?

dude the relay is what tells the ecu that it has a faulty glow plug so if you have replaced plugs and harness replace the relay and all will be good

21watt bulb or test lamp(not an led lamp)

pull all the leads off glow plugs

one lead to positive of battery

other onto pole of glow plug

if the bulb lights up plug ok

if no light plug dead

test other plugs too

remember don't put your golw plugs on battery you will damage them and burn yourself

because pd diesels duty cycle the glow plugs on and off

no lightly no likey replace as required [;)]
