okay bought, what I thought was a GT TDI 130 Mk4. turns out it has been a right off, so I dont know if it is a PD 130 engine. So far I have had an air lock in the head, and still runs stupid pressures through the top radiator hose, almost as if there was air in it, but the temperature gauge reads 90, I have had it spike once, but that was because I opened the expansion tank top and it came realy far up the expansion tank hen went back down to normal level after squeezing the top hose a few times. My climate control only runs cold, NO matter what. I don't know how to fix it, I changed the coolant, the old stuff looked like last nights curry. Now this is going to sound really stupid. How can I tell if it is a PD engine, more importantly how can I tell if it is a PD 130? I am guessing it is in need of a service and I can only get .... max 36-37mpg =[. my friends 307 HDI 90bhp keeps up with mine so in theory PD 130 9.3 seconds 0-60 and top speed of 127mph...Off the top of my hhead and the 307 13.0 secs 0-60? doesnt add up. My rover was faster then my golf =[
Sorry for all the silly questions, first diesel I have owned, so dont know the greatest about them, but I will have to start somewhere

Many thanks in advance

Will

P.S I have found out it is a PD engine, just don't know how to establish which one atm

i might be wrong,, but i`m sure the pd130 and pd 150 both have 6 speed gearboxes,, the others only have 5 speed
If you call your local VW and give them your reg or chassis number could they not give you info on the car? I'm guessing it would only tell you what the car was when they sold tho I spose. If the engine has been changed then they wouldn't know.

You're nearly right. The PD 115, 130 & 150 all had 6 speed box's. The rest had 5 speeds.

OP, have you got any info on the cause of the write off? I.e if it was a rear end shunt, it's unlikely to have had an engine transplant. Any reciepts for work carried out?
Check under the boot carpet there is a sticker with the engine code and spec.yours should be ASZ 96KW. If its a non PD engine you will have a fuel pump above the alternator.[:|]
Easiest way to find out is if the injectors are under the cam cover its a PD, if there outside the head its common rail
If the coolant is like 'last nights curry' - sounds like the head gasket is knackered & water is mixing in with the oil. This could also cause the excess pressure you described in the header tank as the pressure from the engine leaks into the cooling system.

Any car that has a head gasket problem will lose power, hence why the 307 can keep up...
Oh balls about the Head gasket, would explain the turbo acting wierd, I ill give you an example, turbo spools up , then backs off boost slightly at around 2K and the boosts again up to 3k and then drops off boost again then , it is out of it's power band to 4K. Right time for answers to your question about the shunt, it is a front end shunt, I can see the different paint colour on the front quarters and bonnet. it is a common rail system, so my dad says and he knows diesels. now how to find out with pd it is.
Hi there,

How long you had the car? Were you aware when you bought it that it had been in a smash? If not then you might have a bit of come back on who you bought it off.

(Didn't really answer any of you questions..........)

Andrew
No I didn't know it was in a smash only had it 3 days now. I am happy with it. stupid question, how much is a HG ? or now hard are they to do your self ? many thanks =]

If its a common rail, then its not a PD engine.

Have you got the service book? If so, there is a sticker in the 1st page with the engine and gearbox code on it. Tell us that and we will tell you the engine. This sticker should be identical to the one in the boot by the spare wheel, under the lift up carpet.
If the engine has been changed then the indicated code in the service book and the sticker under the boot carpet may not be correct, best to check on the engine itself for the code.
right I have the boot mat ,just taken a picture of the sticker, where is the coding on the engine ? thanks guys =]
I wasn't aware that any of the VW golf mk4 Diesel engines are common rail i thought they where all indirect injection engines but the PD range having a high pressure fuel pump?

Ian
Where's the ode on the engine?
Try looking around the area where the timing belt is. If not it will be somewhere on the top half of the engine.
I think there is an engine code on the cambelt cover at least there is on mine, you need to take the top cover off 1st.

Three letter code
Should be asz for the 130 and ajm is the 115
