[:S] Mate has just had to tow me home after car died.....

Have had no symptoms at all before today. Got on motorway and traction control , airbag and abs lights came on. Then all dash lights went out. Pulled over to check lights were still on outside, they were, just dimmer than usual. Got back in and set off again ( left car running when checking ), then car began juddering as in losing power, before coming to a standstill on slip-road leaving motorway.

Hope it's battery and not alternator. Although alternator/battery light never lit up, which it would do wouldn't it???

Before I order one, is the Bosch S5 ok does anyone know....

Just seen link to this site now, and Varta battery is £20 cheaper. Well £20 is about 100 miles....

I might be wrong mate, but I dont think your battery would cause that. It sounds more like alternator, or something else.

Reason I say this is that the battery is only actually used to start the car. Once the car is running everything runs from the alternator, hence why I think it isnt the battery.

There is a thread somewhere on here about how to test your battery and alternator! Think it is by imagewerx.

Cheers
Have seen the thread by imagewerx, but I'm as technical as Frank Spencer!! Have took battery off, and my little window is black as opposed to green as well.....
Sounds like an alternator to me mate, but I mite be wrong, if you've got a voltmeter you can check it your self if you have the correct amount of volts coming out of the alternator.

If not, then I recommend you take it to an experienced electrician to have a thorough look over.

This happened to me a few weeks back, and I ended up spending hundreds of pounds on a new alternator and battery, etc, without properly identifying the problem first. [:(]
Alternator. All power comes from it when the cars running.

Get a volt meter across th positive and negative terminals and see what voltage its kicking out.

Sounds like a screwed regualtor in the alternator,

Hi Chris,

I have the same exactly problem as above.

Can the regulator be separately replaced? Where is it about? on the alternator or engine bay?

Many thanks

Nikos
[;)] Just to update as forgot to do so, this was sorted by ordering a new alternator fuse for one in fuse box which sits on battery.

£3 from VW, sorted.......
