Hi Guys,

Newbie with a GTi

Well I never thought I would be joining another forum now I'm in my 40s drive a diesel BMW and play golf, I have been away from the car / modding scene for a few years the last being Subaru. I was staff on a couple of clubs / forums back then.

I am a mechanic to trade be it I left the trade in 2004.

Over the 20+ years I have run around and modified far too much cars to count, starting with Ford from MK1&2 fiestas inc XR2, MK4&5 Escorts inc XR3i's & RS turbos and Mondeos, moving onto Subaru from classic wagons, to blobeye back to a classic 2 door STi heavily modified through to the last of the STi a new 2014 STi.

So now I am back on the forums after my 12 year old son is desperate for me to buy a car for us to work on together, I had always fancied a MK4 GTi as one of my m8s had the last of the 180 bhp models (I was in Impreza's at the time), So here I am to find out from you guys with the knowledge base on the best way to fix issues and worthwhile mods.

The Golf is a 2002 (51) 1.8t GTi with the AUM engine, the body and underside are solid with very minimal rust (has had wings), only issue 馃ぃ is an EML which I still have to code read, I'm going to guess its the lambda as the previous owner changed the down pipe and thinks he put the 2 sensors on the wrong way around, and when on easy acceleration the car runs ok but when you put the foot to the floor it stutters and hesitates very badly until you lift of accelerator.

I have all new breather / vacuum pipework on order along with a catch can and 19mm hose, a new Forge 008 valve, I have discovered a split vacuum and disconnected vacuum line from the manifold, the previous owner put on which looks like a cheap N75 valve so the standard will go back on now I have discovered the vacuum hoses.

So that's the starting point along with a full service which will possibly include new coil packs. I will more then likely start a wee project thread as the plan is to get the engine running sweet then go for the rest of the car / full running gear & ICE.

So Hi guys and I'm sure I will be busy in the how to section over the next few months.

Awesome. Rewarding working on cars with the nipper. Mine (also 12) has helped do the cooling system on a Volvo 940 and EGR, air filter, and coil packs on my Golf. They get to do engine mechanics at school in a couple of years so he's ahead of the game already.

yes it will be good fun, he is looking forward to it, although my very understanding wife is dealing with a barrage of boxes arriving with parts 馃槀馃ぃ馃ぃ but i don't think my bank account will be too impressed.

More action in the Facebook groups to be fair.

Plus you'll likely get a better response in technical threads or help threads than intro's.

Plenty moved on from the mk4, still a lot of knowledge here though and a couple of incredibly decent, knowledgeable, chaps who will chime in if you're patient

'allo, by the way...

Ex mk4 owner here...
Though I do have a mk1 octavia which is mk4 platform so I come here for the kind of help I can't get elsewhere
