Certainly a lot cheaper than the ?900+ that mine cost from VW - thankfully covered in full by Warranty Direct.

What sort of warranty to you get on it? VW one will have a year from fitting.

Cheapest quote I got last year was ?700 supplied and fitted! VW wanted over ?1300 inc labour. In the end, got it done at a Skoda dealer for ?900 and a damn good job they did. Quote you've got is dirt cheap!

You should be able to get the compressor for around ?280 + VAT from a specialist or a motor factor.

If you are getting the compressor replaced, it's also a good idea to
replace the Dryer unit aswell, normally around ?35 from the dealer.

The dryer unit should be easy to fit, it's just a filter for the compressor and mounts on the radiator.

As from the compressor, I got mine from
GMS in Kent, they also
fitted it for a good price. Though I also recall
Camberley Auto Parts
gave me a good price for a replacement compressor.

My stealer quoted me ?900 for a replacement compressor! Fortunately, they misdiagnosed the problem so I didn't have to pay it so it sounds like you're getting a good deal there. Is the quote from a main dealer? I doubt it's a genuine VW part for that price.

The replacement compressor isn't made buy VW anyway, it's made by
Sanden. VW just choose to mark up the price of the compressor by 300%
because, people who don't know what they are worth, are willing to pay
the VW price tag.

You should be able to go to any Air Con speciallist who should be able
to quote you a book price for the job, which shouldn't be over ?500.

When my compressor went VW quoted me over ?1300 + VAT to a replacement
unit and fitting, and even tried to say that my car was undriveable
without a compressor, as I wanted it removing so I could drive my car
without have the AC fixed there and then.

From the outside of my car i can hear a clattering/chattering noise when car is idling, is this the air con unit or the engines tappets?

Cheers for that info mate. I didn't realise that. You told me just in time too - apparently the aircon compressor clutch is on the way out so I might take it to a specialist rather than VW. Should save me a bob or two!

Oh and by the way, my dealer told me exactly the same thing when they said my aircon was faulty and wouldn't disconnect it!

Hang on, I might be able to save you some more money

If your clutch is just at fault, e.g the compressor is still ok, you might be able to just replace the clutch

Have a look as Chris's (Rally Chris) web site for more details;

Save me money?? That's music to my ears!! [:D] Really not sure what's at fault but someone on here said it's probably the clutch. Basically, there's a rattle type noise coming from the aircon compressor area when running the heater on ECON but disappears when aircon is running. Here's the link to my post and any more feedback would be a great help:
