Was driving down the M1 happily back to my hometown London, hitting hard beats with my W6, & as soon as I hit London my bass just went. Had no idea why, was absolutely gutted when I got back to Leeds & noticed my sub.

Absolutely gutted, Im sure you guys agree its one of the best subs going (apart from the W7 of course). To be honest it was my fault, Ive got a precision power 1500.1 amp, & I put the gain up a bit more when I set off to London, cant believe I blew it [cry]

But anyway guys, its all about learning from mistakes, Ive learnt not to put the gain up too much & Ive also learnt to get two subs instead [:D]. So what do you guys think? I was thinking maybe two 15" alpine type R's? I think 12s are good all rounders or would you guys say two 15s? Have you guys heard of shadow works?? They realised a sub called the goliath a while ago, was thinking of getting two 12s in them. Also, what about two 12" vibe space subs, has anyone here got these or have heard them in action? Im open to suggestions would be grateful to ideas, but please dont recommend me JL, they are a very very good company & I really wanted two 12" w6's, & I was saving up towards that second w6, but I dont want JL anymore, far too expensive. Cheers guys [y]

Gutted for you mate, its not nice when your sub goes [cry]

My JBL died after cooking in a sealed box back in the summer (remember the summer?). I replaced it with a 12" Alpine Type R and love it to bits.

Great sub, highly recommended, and really kicks seeing as its only in a 1cubic foot sealed box.

Trust me mate, I was absolutely gutted, especially cos its quite a high end sub. You might just be a life saver, I was thinking of getting 2 type r 12" subs. How do they sound? I havent found anyone that has actually got them. Also have you got the 2ohm version? Cheers [Y]

I have a type R 12" new type, had it a year now with the MRD 605 amp, very powerful, 653w rms rated @ 4ohm with the sheet I got with it (handwritten n tested)

Very nice round sounding sub, definately for SQ, used to have two 10"s in my old car the early type (Alpine ZR) and they were fantastic took more than they were rated at (300wrms, I gave them each 450wrms at 2ohm) and they lasted till I sold them to the next happy customer, can recommend the type r completely absolutely fantastic.

Don't forget that 15s will give you more rumble than 12s which will be tighter and punchier, depends on what kind of bass you like really.Put two dual 4 ohm type Rs into a Range Rover today in a 12in stylee, each one in a shade under 1 cubic foot sealed, and even driven off an 800 watt Mutant X amp and box fresh and nowhere near being run in yet, they do sound very nice.

I think you guys are tempting me to get the alpine type Rs, it'll probably never match my JL but it'll definately be louder. I'll probably go for the dual 2ohm versions as I have a precision power 1ohm stable amp, 1500rms at 1ohm. Can anyone recommend me any other subs? I can go out and buy JL audio again, or even MTX, they're making a name for themselves, but I really dont want to cos Im sure I can get plenty of bass with a smaller budget. Has anyone heard of the shadow works sub?

Not heard of Shadow Works, and I should think MTX are making a name for themselves, they've been making speakers for long enough, and they've also been making speakers for a LOT of other companies for a long time.To get max power out of a monoblock 1 ohm stable amp, you'll need dual 4 ohm voice coiled subs,as two dual 2 ohm will give you either half an ohm,or 2 ohms, but for a stereo amp dual 2s will work.
How about Pioneer subs, they are after all one of the oldest speaker manufacturers in the world, and I don't know anyone who's ever managed to blow up a Pioneer sub, which is more than I can say for the majority of Stateside originated speakers. The quality control on everything made by Pioneer is second to none, and their current range of SPL subs really do take some beating.

They sound great mate, really tight bass for a 12" and not boomy at all. Look like they will take a lot of power too.

I've got one of the dual 4 Ohm versions from bassjunkies.com

Might not be the loudest 12" I have heard but not far off it, and the SQ it gives is wonderful

I would say the type r s are not very loud either but the SQ is fantastic, would really recommend them

They can go loud if you want them to,Alpines reccomended SPL box is a mere 0.5cu.ft,and although you lose a bit of bottom end bass this way, they still sound half decent, their sound quality box is just below 1 cu.ft,so still very practical.
Two dual 2 ohm subs will give you a total of either 0.5 ohms(parallel),8 ohms(series),or 2 ohms(series/parallel),dual 4s will give you 1ohm(parallel),16 ohms (series),or 4ohms (series/parallel).
And how about the Pioneers I mentioned in an earlier post?

You can drop one dual 2 ohm to 1 ohm,but not 2 I'm afraid. You don't say what Precison Power amp you actually have,is a bridged two channel,or a monoblock? If it is a two channel, don't forget that when you bridge it,the amp "sees" half of the actual impedance present,so if you bridge a two channel amp into 2 ohms,it has to work as hard as if is actually working at 1 ohm.So if the spec for your amp says 1 ohm stable, you can't bridge into less than 2 ohms, but this doesn't apply to monoblocks,1 ohm is still 1 ohm.I take it your W6 was wired to show 3 ohms to the amp?

And have a look at this Pionner sub,IMHO better built than JLs.

I was running pioneers in my car just last night i sold them for ?80 lol as im not in to bass any more.. so now all im using is a 10" free-air kenwood sub.. made a custom enclosure to be fitted yet and had a test run earlia on and to tell you the truth sounds just as good but looses it at top end but for easy listening music the thump of the drums etc is still there and a more warmer and mellow bass sounding sub..

Why are you making an enclosure for a free air sub,it won't be free air if you do?They will work that way (more power handling),but you'll lose out on bottom end and transient response.

Sorry never explained myself properly.. im making a facing board for it.. and screwing it down to the back of the chairs and going to cut a hole out in the rear armrest so it will be direct bass in to the cabin..

Aaahhh, that'll work then, the best bass I ever heard in a car was a mate of mines Escort cabriolet with just two free air Namkimich 8in subs mounted on a baffle board and firing at the back seat. From the sheer volume and how low it dropped, you'd swear he had at least on 15in sub in there, but it was one of those very rare installs that sounded good on absolutely any type of music, and very punchy being eights as well.

Yeah i was looking at doing a free air setup in mine and make a v shape where the arm rest is and have some perspex made up and have the faces sealed in to the armrest hole so its pure and direct bass in the cabin.. but im going for the SQ setup now so a nice punchy 10" will do for now. [:D]
