well finally after over 4 months my car has finally arrived, and has it been worth the wait, oh yes not half. For the past week the stealer lent me a MKV 2.0 GT with dsg gearbox, which i thought was great but the dsg in the GTI is even better. The shifts are quicker and smoother, having the paddles is fantastic, for those of you going for the dsg you have made the right choice, it really is as good as the press say it is.

As for my other options list, center armrest is great, esp if you have dsg as you can sit in total comfort when in auto, it also looks alot better than the large space left when you do not have it (i think you get cup holders instead). The leather is fantastic, it looks great and feels very tough, to be honest i would have never bought one without leather but either way the leather is nice quality. Hi-Line comp is great esp for ?45, everyone should get that, i have managed to turn of that stupid feature that only unlocks the drivers door, now all doors unlock with one press, i have also turned on door locking when you drive aware (anti-hijak), there are lots of other options but no real intructions in the books so it is a case of trial and error. The winter pack (heated washer jets, headlamp washers and low fliud level) i can't really comment on but will be good if it all works. The folding mirros with puddle lighting is a nice feature, when you unlock the car the area around the door is illumiated for a light under the wing mirror. The 18's look the biz defo the option to have, the ride is not compromised atall and there is no harshness from pot-hole etc

Overall i think the car is fantastic and quality is easily as good as my bmw's, i cannot comment on the performance yet as i am still taking it easy.

For those of you waiting it will be worth it, believe me.[:)][:)][:)][:)]

The only bad thing is that the stealer didn't put any petrol in it !, i had about 50miles b4 i needed to fill up !, nice

Does anyone know what comfort indi is in the highline comp options ?, there are plenty of menus but no instructions.

I've been following your story for a while now, and it brought a huge grin to my face when I saw your post this morning. So pleased you've finally got it. I've been waiting over 3 months for mine now and I know exactly how you feel. 3 more weeks to go for me [:(]

Looks like your the first person from Reading to get a black GTI, hopefully I'll be the second. Get those pics up as soon as you can !!

All the best

sounds v nice i should get mine on sunday

just out of interest doc what other things does the highline comp allow you to do

thanks

you can change between m and km for the trip comp, auto closing/opening of windows on locking/unlocking of doors, brightness of footwell lights, confort indi ?(don't know what that is), the time the headlights are lights are on when locking and unlocking (comming home lights), auto locking and unlocking of doors when you drive away/stop (anti-hijack), single door unlocking (the dreaded feature when pressing the remote only unlocks the drivers door), i have turned this off.

not sure what else i will have a look later today, well worth ?45 just to turn off that single door unlocking.

Brilliant Doc, I am so happy for you (and me). I have also been following your trials and tribulations while you were waiting for this car and am beginning to feel the same myself. this little peace has put a massive smile on my face and should give me a little boost (I may still have a 5 week wait [:(!]). Being followed into petrol station for someone to say how nice the car looked is really cool (and a little scary at the same time). Let us know how the performance compares after you have run the car in. Thanks dude, made my day[:D]

Doc,

what was your build week and how long then did it take until you collected it.

Mine is to be built next week, I enquired about going over to get it as I was over there last year but no go unless I had bought a Phaeton [:(!]. Obviously not spending enough money according to VW.

Glad to see you are enjoying it.

Doc

You're just making those of us who are waiting so jealous. Finally lost my virginity the other week when I spotted another GTi in the flesh, put a smile on my face and made the wait seem even longer. GF comes back from Leeds most days boasting that she's seen another GTi.

to be honest i cannot really remember what it was as it kept changing and i was doing my best to keep calm through the whole thing. What i can say is that from going into production to it being on my drive was not that long, the car got built in one week and took about a week to get here, in my experience most of the times you are given by VW are the worst case senario, everything i was told came earlier, ie. build date, delivey date, appart from the overal delivery date being one month late, but i won't talk about that as i am calm at the mo.

To be honest it was worth it as the car is just sooooo good, the build quality is fantastic and all the options i added are worth the cash (to me anyway). Performace wise it seems V strong at low revs, and the handling is way better than my Focus RS or Mini Cooper S. And as for the DSG, it is awesome, makes a lovely popping noise every time you change gear, which with paddles seems to be quite often !.

Sorry to bore you all, but my Mrs is fed up with hearing about it !

I am lucky enough to be given a MK5 GTI DSG for a 24 hour test drive. I pick it up tomorrow at noon.

Doc, I agree that the paddles are esential with the DSG. I have driven the GTI without, and didnt like it that much - I just wish the Paddles came as standard and not at extra cost!
