your air con needs disinfecting, common thing and should really be done annually, dealer or good air con place can do for you, involves letting a canister of disinfectant off in car with air con on recirculate mode, bacteria grows inside air con system, if you dont you can end up with colds, sore throats etc.
There is a can of stuff (sorry I dont know the name), that most car accessory dealers stock (Halfords, Motaman etc)...its about ?20. Just spray the entire can into your car, stick aircon on recirculate for 10mins...and hey presto!
The bacteria build up can be lessened if the Aircon is used for 5minutes (minimum) each time the car is driven. FACT!
Apparently it also helps if you switch off the aircon a few mins before the end of your journey to allow the moisture to dry out of it thus creating a less friendly atmosphere for your bacterial friends!
I also had the 'dead rat in the vents' smell when I got my car so I tried the Comma Air Conditioning Cleaner. Cost me ?11 from The Motorist Centre. Followed the instructions to the letter but it only worked for about 4 days!!! And that's it! Very disappointed!
I find that if I turn the air con off a few mins before the end of my journey helps. With the cooler weather now, the smell is completely gone as I'm not using the air con at all.
I have had them same experience of the Comma spary. Worked for about 3
days. Did get hold of a spray for Citroens that came with a
decent lead on the spray nozzle so got it down the vents etc. This only
lasted about 2 weeks before the smell stated to come back. Anyone had
the 'official VW' treatment....did it work and for how long?
I used the spray stuff and it worked well. Get a type with a long
flexible tube. With the aircon on, low blower setting, spray loads up
the aircon drain hole in the engine bay bulkhead - this gets it
directly to the aircon evaporator where the mould is. Spray a bit down
the vents inside, but this won't work on it's own. If you want to take
the pollen filter off - spray some down the opening with the aircon on.
If it still smells then replace the pollen filter.
click on 'Catalogue' then 'Air conditioning system cleaner' at left, then it is part no : 4087 with 4088 tube on the page. aircon

The 1l and 5l bottles are the same stuff but in
bulk for use by dealer with nozzle which attaches to the garage
compressed air line.
