Has anyone gotten to the bottom of this noise when turning left at low speeds. It seems to affect more 150's. My car is completely standard. I do remember seeing another post on here about it.

Its more frequent now that my warrenty has expired [:(!]

That will be the Warrenty timer installed by VAG [:)]

I have not read anything on it, but I sure somebody will have.

its something to do with the power steering pump.

guess its because it has to work harder at low speed so it hums.

some people have got rid of the noise by topping up the power steering fluid. however mine full to the max and it still does it sometimes.

just one of those odd things.

Mine does this too but only on near full lock at low speed - I think it is the power steering pump as mentioned - as long as its topped up ok I dont think its causing any extra wear and tear - just makes a noise. If your listening for it all the time you will hear it getting louder and louder!!! Cos your listeneing for it!!

Ive just forgot about it and turn tunes up!!

I have a 1.8 T and have just noticed the same sound. It only does it when the car is moving 10-25 MPH ish and the steering wheel only slightly turned to the left.

My power stearing level is also well topped up. Weird tho?[:O]

could be CV - try rocking the wheel to see if it has play.

it could still be power steering pump and maybe its in frequency with the wheel because its unbalanced. does it make the noise when turning at higher speed? is noise at near full lock only?

if its near full lock at slow speeds, take the bend in 1st or something to keep the revs up. if it doesnt have noise then its prob just the pump.

The wheels has no play in it.

It only make the noise at low speeds 10-20 mph when turning slightly to the left. No noise on full lock or at speed. Noise appears to come for the front left of the vehicle......

weird one

I am getting a similar noise from mine, I thought it was a wheelbearing but jacked it up and, no play. If you find out what it is i'd be interested, on the other hand if I find out i'll let you know.

Cheers

Wallace

Yeah i'd love to get to the bottom of this. I pop it around to my mechanic in the week, but the car decided not to make a sound[:(!] He check over the engine and just said not to worry about it unless the noise becomes constant!!

Check your anti-roll bar bushes...
thanks for the suggestion the roll bar bushes are ok, the cars not loaded up as its at parking speed.

I've slightly over filled the PAS sunday to see if that helps. There are many different ways I've read on how to check the fluid - don't know which one is right. Do u unscrew wipe and dip in, do u unscrew wipe and screw till the first arrow - both will give different fluid level readings. I used the dip in method Sunday. Fluid wasn't missing but just where it was last time I checked.

Strange its only on 150's, maybe the pipework is re-routed
