Mk4 GTi - but which engine is it?

My mate is starting to see the light and has swapped his Saab cab for an '02 black 3 door GTI... [^]

However, being a retard, he's not sure what engine it is... [xx(]

He's picking it up on Tuesday, so I haven't seen it yet.

It says on the "log book" it's a 1800, however the salesman said it's a 2.0 litre...

The car has a red "I" on the rear GTI badge, and it has BBS RX rims... any idea what engine it is?

If the red I badge is original factory fit and it really is a 1.8, then good news, it's a 180bhp turbo. It will also have a 6 speed box.

If it's a 2 litre, then it only has a puney 115 bhp.

Some early 1.8t gti's with 150 bhp, also had a red i badge. They will only have a 5 speed box though.

The red i badge was also fitted to uk versions of the golf 1.9 tdi pd 150 bhp. TOP CAR. Fast as **** and 50mpg. I know, i've got one...

I already asked him that, he said he's pretty sure it only had 5 gears.

I can't believe how useless my friends are!! [:I]

I'll get him to call VW with the chassis... he paid ?9500 for it, so I can't imagine it's the 180, on an '02 plate.

Not true! Most petrol 150ps gti's were fitted with all silver badges.

Enough about badges. Everyone loves changing them, including vw.

Sound like to car in question is most likely a 150ps 1.8 turbo. The logbook will give the definative answer.
