Hi, Had my golf since march 2013 now and have been a member on here since. often enjoy a browse of the various threads on here so I thought id start my own.



Brought my golf to be a sensible economical daily as I have a 60 mile commute and it was starting to be a bit of a struggle for my 1979 classic mini! The plan was to simply buy and look after the golf as well as possible so the mini could be my weekend toy. That quickly changed (after about a day) when I realised I couldn't have a car without having the occasional tinker! So I now had 2 projects on the go!

Its an 03 plate 1.9 tdi pd golf match 100hp with 92000 on the clock. no service history but did have old mots and drove right and ran right. all details checked out hpi clear ect so I brought it.

It needed cam belt doing and a clutch which enabled me to get the price down a bit so I was happy.

This is on a typical summers day in wales

The first mod was to fit front and rear cup holders found some cheap on ebay, gave them both a good clean and fitted. seems very tight from vw on a mid spec model to give aircon, leccy windows and other luxuries but nothing as simple as cup holders!

Next up was the stereo, as standard it had a beta unit with no rear speakers. I went down to a scrap yard and cut the b pillar door connectors and a pair of tweeters connectors from a crashed gti they had there. I then got some standard speakers of ebay along with a gamma head unit (for 99p!) and rear door looms and did an oem rear speaker install. All put back together and sounding much better (well a bit better!) will be putting some decent speakers and double din head unit when funds allow but for now it will do and should make it very easy to upgrade when the time comes.

Also fitted a sunglasses holder in place of the drivers roof handle.

On the way back from Cornwall she suddenly went In to limp mode. Nursed her home and scanned on vagcom. Came up with a whole list of errors. one by one I tested and researched each and was getting a bit fed up! finally found it to be a blown fuse, then just needed to find the cause. as if it was replaced I would be fine for a few minutes driving then would blow again. finally found that the valve controlling the antishudder valve had come of its mount burned on the exhaust shorted and blown the fuse. This took out the whole circuit which included the causing all the errors.

Put it back on its mount properly and changed the fuse again and all was well even the valve had survived with just a bit of molten plastic round the bottom.

It also had an issue with the traction control light coming on and staying on after about 15 mins driving. everything still worked and eventually I found this to be simply a lead that had been knocked off the alternator. simply plugged back in and car error code free

Also gave her a full service with all genuine filters and quantum oil. certainly needed it as cabin filter looked never to have been changed and oil was lovely and black!

It does help that I enjoy working on cars other wise id be bankrupt with garage bills!

Next job was to have a go at tidying up the interior. It wasn't really in bad condition but the rubber coating on door handles and the centre console was starting to wear away and look a bit tatty. Id seen a few threads about wrapping parts and seen a lot of carbon fibre. I also like the look of the silver r32 parts but the prices of second hand stuff did seem a little high. I decided to have a go at wrapping it all in brushed steel vinyl. Some parts did take several attempts but I'm very happy with the results

Thinking ff getting it mapped at R-tech, From what ive heard about them the offer a great service. I belive its £250 for a stage 1 map? Does this mean its a generic map or will the car get rolling roaded and custom mapped?

Lots of updates!

Stuff done:

Sprayed rubstrips silver along with a general tidy up of a few stone chips, looking lovely now!



All round disc and pad change

changed arb mounts as well as a full fluid and filter service.



Camber!!!





Little mods:

mk5 rear wiper,

GTI interior light (with reading lights),

All interior and no plate lights changed for LEDs,

Power socket in boot,

Twin rear fogs,

GTI head lights with the built in fogs (probably many more ive forgotten about!)



And the big one: GTI heated cloth sports seats , very comfy, much more supportive in excellent clean condition and of course heaters! Rear seat has the 3 proper seat belts and 3 head rests to replace my standard rear bench with a centre lap belt. Almost feel guilty as the old seats were/ are in very good condition. Gave the car a very thorough clean whilst seats were out.











Both the fogs and the seats use kufatec looms which were dead easy to fit and seem excellent quality.

Stuff still planned:

Cruise control retrofit,

sports springs 30mm drop and shocks, maybe rear arb,

remap possibly with a 130 turbo and pipework upgrade (will get mapped first and then decide!)

detachable towbar (for all those scene points)

upgrade head unit then speakers

new wheels, really like the anni BBS but they are rather pricy and some look absolutely wrecked from curbing.

My second golf was a pd 100. Bought it with only 46000 miles on the clock and its still in the family. Has 120 000 on the clock now and drives perfectly. I had it mapped by r tech at 59 000 miles. It drove really smooth after the remap, good progressive power. It was a generic map and not a custom map though.

had a problem with the brake switch on Tuesday evening, dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and engine workshop on screen no brake lghts. scanned on vagcom and got a brake switch fault and a abs sensor fault. turns out the abs one is brought up by the brake switch fault so £13 and a trip to vw later problem fixed and error code free once again



Today gave it a good clean and fitted reg plate surrounds and new pressed plates.







Desperately needs lowering!

Todays achievement! best ive ever had. was over 20 miles coming out of a city and along dual carriageway. car still totally standard engine wise so once its remapped and egr deleted it should be even better, who needs a prius eh!

It is on screen 1 but hard to see with how the sun is shining, took a while to get a shot without just seeing reflection.
