My dad is currently looking to swap his 2 cars (Porsche 996TT and Merc/Carlsson S500 - PM if, seriously, interested in either) and get down to 1 quick car that will still seat 4 people if need be. So far it has been a Bentley Conti GT that has most intersted him - until we saw an advert for a Merc dealers in Leeds and they had a CL65.

(click this to see the advert - it's the last one on the page http://www.mercedes-benzofleeds.co.uk/gdlist?template=/merc2003/hitlist&dealer=1515&mbcolour=blue&model=:730:1920&bodystyle=&engine=&transmission=#

To cut a long story short we were there quick as a flash to have a look. Absolutely awesome in the flesh, those wheels are some of the nicest I have ever seen. Great salesman (23yr old uni grad) didn't turn his nose up at the fact we were in scruffy jeans and trainers (don't you just hate it when salespoeple judge you by what you wear!) and offered us a test drive.

Pulling out of the showroom the car did not really sound too special, until he touched the accelerator!! The thing had such a deep v12 grumble. It was not excessively loud, it was just so deep!! Out on the raod the thing is very discreet and doesn't look too special to the untrained eye - it really is a stealth speed machine. It has the comfort and refinement of the s-class. Plant your foot on the accelerator and all hell breaks loose. Acceleration is more fierce than the 996. Tyres squealing under heavy acceleration in 3rd!! God only knows how that transmission copes with all that power and torque (700+lb/ft). Apologies must go out to the 911 carrera driver who wanted to race on the M621 - we did try to race but you could't keep up!! The mid range punch acompanied by that glorious sound was just totally addicive - hence 8mpg.

They are currently putting together a deal but I guess the real question is: - CL65 or Conti GT?? Yet to drive the Conti but i'm just not sure we can get on with the styling of it's rump.

OMG how much for a car [?].

I know the merc is nice & all that, but the interior is so uninspiring.

I wouldn't have a clue about choosing between them, i can't even begin to think about having that much money, just to spend on a car [!].

Good luck with his/your decision though...........

I thought there was nothing wrong with the interior (mind you, I drive a mk5!!). i would certainally say it was better than the interior in the S-class we currently have. All the dash/seats/centre console/door cards etc. were double stitched leather and the rooflining was alcantara.

Car is likely to spend most of it's time on the motorway and the main downside to the Bentley is the fact that it will do considerably less mpg than the Merc. Also, in terms of residual value we are wondering if the Merc is likely to retain good value due to ther being only 20 brought into the country??

A difficult decision I would go for the Bentley but only in a dark colour as they do not suit that red at all, it is the interior that does it for me.

Although no offence intended if your father has a porsche and a merc, the interior is probably not one of the highest check points on his list of things to have in a car.

Bentley!

It's got loadsa power, but more importantly it's got 4wd which will make a big difference when you've got over 500bhp!!

Ok it's abit ugly from behind, but who cares?!

Trouble is with bad boy AMG mercs, is that there is always going to be ANOTHER amg car around the corner with MORE power.. the model life is never more that a few months!

Atleast with the Bentley it'll be one model only, and you know there isn't going to be a replacement for it for a few years

Very true as soon as they can make a gearbox strong enough to handle the 880lb ft of torque the engine actually creates before they detuned it, then it will be out dated and it cant be far away.

P.S. You have got to love the interior a lovely relaxing place to be.

I would have the Merc. Not that I am ever likely to have that much cash to choose!

However, I do know an Evo III with a 20K mod list can be quick? "Only" ?50k in price and with 500bhp and four seats, a suitable alternative?!

One of the local lads where I live has a 550bhp Evo 7. Awesome machine.

And lots of cash in change to pay for the servicing and tow trucks when it breaks down!!!

Hee hee

I'd deffo have a cont GT. The merc looks like a normal CL500, you wouldnt notice the difference! However the Conti is in a league of its own, and its still VAG! Tell your dad to buy that and join the forum!

If you've got any pic's on your digi cam, save them first to your pc, then sign up to a picture hosting site like http://photobucket.com/ (very simple and is free, make a donation and get you accout supersized, i sent ?2) Then upload your pics to Photobucket (you will see how to ) just go to the add picture box (browse on the right) click on browse and get your pic file then click submit. Now there on the web (so to speak!)

You will then see your pic with 3 named boxes below it Url, Tag and Img.

Now when you are replying to a thread, click on the little picture image (5th from the right) this will come up: [*img* ] [* /img*] then go to your photo album, and copy all the stuff in the url box and past between the [*img*][*/img*] ie:

[*img* ]http://my picture xxxxxxxxxxxxxx[/*img*] then your pic will load up!

Hope this helps oh and (*) will not be there, i did it on purpose!

i think the bentleys a bit weird looking, esp the pic with the spoiler!!! saw 1 in black the other day, looked okish.

the AMG is amazing, BUT steep depreciation. (even if there are 20 in tha UK) i know 2-3 people that have 1, and saw 1 at my stealer a few weeks too! must be more than 20.

but buying a car in that class means u can afford a steep depreciation!

that v12 is amazing. go for tha merc!
