My dad is currently looking to swap his 2 cars (Porsche 996TT and Merc/Carlsson S500 - PM if, seriously, interested in either) and get down to 1 quick car that will still seat 4 people if need be. So far it has been a Bentley Conti GT that has most intersted him - until we saw an advert for a Merc dealers in Leeds and they had a CL65.
(click this to see the advert - it's the last one on the page http://www.mercedes-benzofleeds.co.uk/gdlist?template=/merc2003/hitlist&dealer=1515&mbcolour=blue&model=:730:1920&bodystyle=&engine=&transmission=#
To cut a long story short we were there quick as a flash to have a look. Absolutely awesome in the flesh, those wheels are some of the nicest I have ever seen. Great salesman (23yr old uni grad) didn't turn his nose up at the fact we were in scruffy jeans and trainers (don't you just hate it when salespoeple judge you by what you wear!) and offered us a test drive.
Pulling out of the showroom the car did not really sound too special, until he touched the accelerator!! The thing had such a deep v12 grumble. It was not excessively loud, it was just so deep!! Out on the raod the thing is very discreet and doesn't look too special to the untrained eye - it really is a stealth speed machine. It has the comfort and refinement of the s-class. Plant your foot on the accelerator and all hell breaks loose. Acceleration is more fierce than the 996. Tyres squealing under heavy acceleration in 3rd!! God only knows how that transmission copes with all that power and torque (700+lb/ft). Apologies must go out to the 911 carrera driver who wanted to race on the M621 - we did try to race but you could't keep up!! The mid range punch acompanied by that glorious sound was just totally addicive - hence 8mpg.
They are currently putting together a deal but I guess the real question is: - CL65 or Conti GT?? Yet to drive the Conti but i'm just not sure we can get on with the styling of it's rump.
