After reading one of Graham's most recent threads last night; while I was out on a drive today I started thinking it would be interesting to see a map of GB & Ireland and have a marker for where each member is from, just to see the geographical spread over the whole of the UK of all the forum users. I was just curious to see if there were certain areas where large amounts of users lived and other areas the didn't contain any members..

Anyone got any ideas on how we could do this?

P.S. Yes. I need to get out more. [:|] [:)]

You just need one hell of a good coder [;)]

Tried it on another forum I'm involved in, but we couldn't find anyone
with the right skills to write it... It is a good idea though, even if
it sounds a bit weird at first [;)]

Think this works., If you get aXL list of all full postcodes of users,
then Microsoft mappoint can importit into map of gb and place markers
at each point!

We use it at work to map our Vendors within sales regions.

If you seriously want this done, let me know.  I have a degree in Geographical Information Systems and work for a mapping company.

Smart thinking!!

I'm was planning this for early next year sometime using Google Maps API.

Here's how it will look

It's gonna get a bit crowded with 1,000's of members so will probably have an profile option if you want to be added

Google Maps
API.....
much easier than it looks
Nice one! Did you do all that?
Almost...had some help with the code and our back office system...its
basic compared to www.ononemap.com but does the job! I'm not sure how
useful it would be in a member location context though? As everyone
would be able to view an overhead shot of each others houses give or
take 30 feet - a
perfect menu for car thieves...

Meets, suppliers, dealiers etc would be mint though

True, and I believe you need the latitude and longitude of all the
pointers, members would need to enter that themselves, unless you can
map to postcodes

The yanks have free online geocoders, sof ar I can't find a British one
- costs lots [:(]. So I have been going to www.multimap.co.uk, typing
in the postcode and then under the map the lat and lng is provided.

I'm sure someone will do a web service or similar soon, Royal Mail do/did but it costs per request
