Whilst visiting relatives in Long Eaton, Notingham, yesterday, we called in the local Halfords. Noticed a few products from the Meguiars range on the shelves (and very little Autoglym).

Is this a sign of things to come?

About time too, I was looking for Meguiars car shampoo this weekend and only pap to be fouind in my local Halfrauds. Ended up going to an independant retailer who has only started selling Meguiars. I got big bottle of Techwax shampoo and also got the Meguiars microfibre cham and Hotwheels wheel cleaner!

Well, I had to !

T'other day I emailed the customer care people at autoglym to (rather cheekily) ask them if they were and I quote:

"Just a quick note to ask if, with the introduction of Meguiars products to Halfords, you are even getting slightly worried that the competition is leaps and bounds ahead of you ? Do you have any plans to update your rather aging product line ?"

I got a reply yesterday:

"Dear Daniel

Thank you for your email. No, we're not worried and I can assure you that we are continually reviewing our product line and developing new products, some for the trade range. We did introduce Alloy Wheel Seal last year and this was a huge success.

When you say "update our ageing product line" I have to tell you that everybody that uses Super Resin Polish for example, thinks it is wonderful and we would probably get thoroughly lambasted if we tried to change it.

However, rest assured that we always introduce new products if there is a need for them."

Oh dear.. seems they think there ain't any need ! - I know they were never gonna say "Yeah autodust is our middle name", but still, I thought i'd pull their leg a little ! [:D]

Better still.. ? My gmail page has sponsored links beside the email.. every one of them for Meguiars ! [:D]

Oh and the customer care managers email addy is "[email protected]" too.. PMSL [:)]

Even if they do update or bring out new products they get lost in the middle of the rest of the products with the same dull packaging. They should take a leaf from megs book and introduce a new range like the NXT gen range which shouts out "I'm a new hi-tech product you need to try me!"

Sorry to but in Daniel......Yes A/glym dont often release new products, they are constantly changing there composition of there existing products, and whilst Megs will IMO outsell A/glym in public outlets, you have to remember that most main stealers are only using the A/glym range,(i.e BMW UK, MERCEDES BENZ etc etc), so that is why A/glym are not to worried about competion in retail outlets, as there main source of custom is trade...Another point is that the majority of prestige car owmers only know of A/glym (some no Zymol), now these people are "stuck in there ways" so they will only use A/glym,and when you approach these people with a "foreign" brand they wont have any of it...(its the same as certain brands on this forum).

Yeah, I can see your point totally there, Lee. Some are just afraid of change I guess.

I think some of that stems from the whole "By Appointnment to" thing that Autoglym have got goin' on.. I reckon some of the snooty merc drivers on thier country estates like that and assume it means the product is great.

I have a friend who swears by Autodust products because its used by Aston etc, & has used it since he was a lad. Even at Goodwood last year he wasnt convinced by the Zymol man[V]

I also agree with squky, Autodust do sell the volume of their product via the trade, the only real competition there I guess is AUTOSMART & their van men. Imagine if the local Beeeeemeeeeeer garage used NXT on their Black cars, instant change over I think.

Reminds me of when the Japs started making cars & BL wasnt bothered by their invasion & kept on producing poor products, which people kept buying for a while, until word spread about how good & reliable the jap cars were.
