Major Clattering

Never heard anything like this before. I took a long hard left turn after exiting a roundabout and there was a massive "clattering" noise from I think the engine bay.

Eased off the power and it went away, back on the power again (still going left) and it did it again.

Driving back I couldn't reproduce the sound although I wasn't going as quickly.

I've checked the wheel bearings, no play there and the exhaust is very firmly attached.

Could this be cam endfloat or big end bearings perhaps?

I would have thought if you had engine problems it would be noisy under load whether you are going left, right or straight ahead.

Are you consuming a lot of oil?

What engine do you have?

It it only happens when you are turning it could be a number for things.

I'd check form play in the driveshafts, ball joints, suspension struts (a broken spring might be noisy), top mount bearings.

Wheel bearings, wishbone arms for condition of bushes etc.

Not consuming oil, ball joints, dampers and springs are all less than 8 months old.

I will look into the free play on driveshafts. The clattering only appears when the engine is under full load and turning.

btw its an AEH engine.
*UPDATE AND SOLVED*

This problem turned out to be worn out motot mounts. When cornering the extra lateral force was enough to compress the bushings and allow metal to metal contact.

To enyone reading this, this is the value of a diagnostic approach to fixing your car. I see sooo many people replacing expensive parts and scratching their heads when it doesn't fix their problem.

P.S. a camera phone and some duct tape are often your best friend :)

Glad you resolved the issue.

Top mounts are often neglected.

Whenever any suspension changes are made eg lowering springs etc, it's always good practice to fit new top mounts and bushes as they are cheap and easy to do.
I think he said it was motor (engine) mounts, nothing to do with suspension............
