Hi guys

My mate lost the keys for his golf, and I was thinking of getting a key fob from ebay, getting it cut and reprogrammed, but realised that without a set of keys we cant get it cut in the first place.

Is going to VW my only option? Does anyone know how much this will cost :(

a good locksmith should be able to create a key for the car if he/she has a lock/ignition barrel etc to work from, it is rather expensive but usually cheaper than dealers. you would need to take a door lock or something to them though. we had to do it a couple of times for customers

Just get a standard none remote key cut at the dealers (about £40) from the chassis number (you will need the V5) then you can use this to get a blade for a flip key cut at a locksmith or one of the places that can cut from a pic over the net [y]

Then get a key fob and have it coded by a member on here for money [;)]

Would the £40 key start the car, and lock the doors? Since I think that would be ok for the short-term

Thanks for the reply.

As long as you are not delocked then yes it would manually unlock the doors and start the car once the key is coded to the car as there is an immobiliser chip in it [y]

You could get VW to code it and pay an hours labour or get someone with Vagtacho and VCDS to do it for beer money or if you have the SKC anyone with VCDS can do it

Also have a look through the Key Faq in my sig, it will help you with what to look out for when you get a new remote key [y]

EDIT: just a thought you could always just get the lower part of the key with the blade from the dealers for not much more than a standard key and then source the remote part elsewhere. Worth pricing both options up [y]

had to get a new key for the bora,?160 from an independant vw workshop.this was to supply the key complete and code to the car. tbh he went thro the differant options,ie get blank key,cut but this wont start the car etc etc.according to him the 4 digit code req is embeded in the speedo, specialist diagnostic equipment was needed to retrieve. i know its a lot of money but seemed a lot less hassle just to let hm deal withthe whole lot.god luck tho
