Changing cars & I'm looking for a 150 TDI for around ?10k

Any advise on what to look out for?

I have a few questions - I hope you guys can answer a few. I don't really want anything above 50,000 miles. Would like leater interior but would consider cloth if they were Recaros. Some advertised just say sports seats - are the Recaros an extra, if so are the 'sports' ones any good. Also are all 150's 6 speed? What sort/size of wheels are fitted to these as standard - and which ones look good if I were to upgrade? Are heated seats an option? - Do any of these (or other equipment) depend on the age of the car?

Any other things you can advise me of would be great, thanks.

The cloth seats are the standard GTi Turbo seats (though not the recaro logo'd ones). They all come with 6 speed gearbox. Mine is an '02 one so didn't come standard with climate (air con only) and ASR not ESP. I've read VW tweaked the suspension slightly on the later ones '03 onwards.

Look out for intermittant cooling fans pulsing when the air con is on (not a well known fault), rear wiper hose coming loose. 'Moaning' noise when turning left - this seems to be specific to the 150 tdi - this is really common (though maybe its a design 'feature'). Usually come with cassette\radio with single slot CD.

Std wheels are monty II's. Badged as all silver GTI or all red TDI.

Oh and not to forget they put an all red TDI badge on the engine cover!!

Are you sure?..You say urs is 02 reg,did you buy it new or 2nd hand.I bought my PD150 new and the engine cover TDI is in silver cast.It is now all red because I bought and put the rear badging over it...I could be wrong, maybe the older models did come with factory red TDI badging on the engine cover...I,m just saying this cos if the guy see,s one he may dismiss it as a lesser powered TDI because the engine cover is,nt red. Also my rear badging was T(silver) DI (in red)..But this I'm told is the dealer sticking owt on.........

Also if the rear badge is all red TDI then it is likely to be a import (unless the owner changed it)! As 150's have GTI badges.

Really the 150 pd are have the same spec as the 1.8T!

Also what is ASR & ESP about? I thought all golfs have the ESP as isn't it just traction control?

I bought mine secondhand as I understand the badge should be all read TDI on the boot and on the engine cover (though u can tell the bhp from the build sticker). I guess the person who bought mine wanted the all silver GTI badge (optional).

ASR is traction control has two systems - TCS limits the engine power and EDL, electronic diff lock (up to a particular speed). ESP uses those and adds yaw and steering angle sensors to correct understeer and oversteer. ESP appeared on '03 Golfs

My ASR light flashed up at 70mph when going through standing water with my foot hard on the throttle on the motorway - thats a lot of torque!! The car didn't feel like it lifted at the front but just noticed the ASR light blink.

RE Badging.I changed mine to all red TDI..I said how mine came badged new (PD150 04) it certainly was,nt GT(red)I..Anyways that subject will go on forever in this forum I,m sure.

I agree with the spec it is the same as my old 1.8T except for the seats, although the same, don,t say RECARO..

..According to last weeks Times VW,SAAB,FORD and DC have always stuck to ESP as their name for the traction control.I also don,t know of any golf that has ASR..ACCELERATION SLIP CONTROL..(phew thanks Google)..

edit..I stand corrected SK4tec has ASR...

Not within your parameters as it has done 93k, but my friend Gavin (Baron Von Marlon) is selling the perfect spec car in Classifieds and it is in budget.

http://www.uk-mkivs.net/forums/294641/ShowPost.aspx

It has done 93k, FSH, motorway miles and the car is immaculate.

It has TOTAL spec from factory. Every option on the list ticked. Reflex Silver 5dr PD150. Unmarked 17" Santas and sports suspension, black leather Recaros, xenons, all the winter packs, rain sensors, ESP etc. It also has factory Satnav and CD changer. With that spec its a very rare car. Looks and drives mint.

Tasteful mods include Superchip to 190bhp, Eibach ARB's, 312mm TT Brakes.

I used to own an identical PD130 and helped him source this car with low miles. I would say it is definitely worthy of consideration!

If you want to get hold of him PM me as he works away during the week with his new job (and new company car) so cannot get on the forum much.

I would imagine your gona be looking in the Private sales for one of this age & price, unless its a high miler, which if she's been serviced shouldnt be a worry.

I know the following, based on my 2003 model ......

Engine cover should read TDI

There should be a Front mounted intercooler ( PD130's use a smaller side mounted version)

The front lower valence will have an extra air duct on each side, all other TDI's have just a center one.

Inside it will have VW sports seats, leather steering wheel, 3 rear headrests, & climate will be standard. There will be 6 cogs to choose from too.

Wheels are 16" Montreal 2

As for the rear badge, mine came badged Gti but now reads TDI

Hi Jace..Did you buy you,re golf new?..I Bought mine in 04 new and the engine cover was silver.(kinda rough to the touch like a forging not like the badging on the rear, proud and smooth).I,m just wondering if a lot of 150,s bought 2nd hand have it in red because the previous owner, like myself, have rebadged it.The rear badging is the same size and font as the engine cover and fits perfectly to hide the original cover badge.Has any member of this forum bought his golf new from the factory and can confirm this.I have the FMIC and the 3 slots in the front lower valance. Also boot sticker says 110kw... Just saying how mine came from Wolfsburg thats all and would,nt want anyone to disregard bhp claims because the engine cover is,nt red.

regards

Hi Jace..Did you buy you,re golf new?..
Yep, she was dealer fresh [au]
FOR SALE A VERY RARE GOLF GT TDI PD 150 WITH SILVER CAST TDI ON ENGINE COVER.ONLY 1 IN THE WORLD..!!!!!

What do you reckon the ebay starting bid should be???....Joking aside I know I have the PD150,FMIC and build sticker prove that. But frsash the thread originator should know that badging can not be taken as gospel when buying his Golf.

Oh and my final opinion,I reckon the dealer forgot to badge the cover up and stuck the wrong one on the rear so ner ner...(now where did I put that Suburu brochure)

can anyone clarify weather ESP only came on 03 spec cars - as my 02 plate has the ESP

button on the dash ?

regards - TB

PS - on the badging question, mine came with GT I on the boot, and all red on the engine cover
Mine is a 52 plate and also has the ESP button on dash. I had silver GTI on bootlid but I changed it to GTI [:D]. Engine cover has TDI on it.

ESP became standard on 03 Model Year, which became available in 2002. 01 and 02 model year cars could have it as an option. Pretty sure I'm right about that - its certainly the case for PD130's.

As for badging, as it was applied by UK dealers it's arbitrary.

Done a bit of research; here are the facts:

Rear badge on VW UK cars should be GTI. Some imported cars are badged TDI. Engine cover on nearly all 150TDIs has TDI badge. Some of the very last cars had a cast silver TDI badge.

Specification changes:(UK cars)

Upto 1st May 2002: Cars had ASR and manual aircon as standard.

Cars built 1st May 2002 on:(2003my) ESP and climate now standard. Hence a few 02 reg cars will have later spec.

Other minor changes were aero wipers fitted from August 2002 on and Full height computer display from late(@ Sept) 2003 on.
