yeah thats a good link, but i think it has more relevance to the BMW engine....

Heres another to counter that arguemnt. Trouble is that when you have all the bolt ons there is little else to do. I know there are pros and cons to every mod but i really dont thik a company such as ECS would market something that is potentially THAT damaging.

You can gain power, but at what cost! These have been available for BMW for some time and the report is talking about BMW?s, but the VW kits remove the bottom pulley which on my car is damped and so the outcome would be the same.

really havnt heard any horro stories from these

Just to add, in the USA there are plenty of horror stories and I believe no company is above marketing products that are potently problematic in my 15+ years of tuning I have seen many!

Neuspeed (neuspeed.com) also offer these and although we have not ourselves long term tested them since they're fairly new i wouldnt expect Neuspeed to offer a product that could give engine reliability issues.

Ade, what can you do price wise for the Neuspeed pullies?

that principle applies to all engines people. its the laws of physics not the laws of bmw engines.

that guy has obviously done either a degree in mechanical engineering or higher education as that is all what i am learning at the moment in my HNC course.

if you look back to older technology engines such as beetle aircooled engines, they were not balanced like engines nowadays and only lasted a long time (for the period) as they were built with super low compression and power.

harmonic damper pulleys are not new technology but they are essential in the same way a dymanically balanced high power engine is for longetivity.

dynamic balance being how each rotating part (crank, PULLEYS, flywheel and in some cases clutch) are spun up together on a special machine and material is removed until the parts spin freely and without excessive vibration. a lot like when the wheel monkey balances your wheels. however, they add material to get the wheels balanced.

pistons and con rods are also match balanced weight for weight.

if you change the pulley for a lighter version you change all the balance across the length of the assembly.

just bolting these pulleys on will do no long term good. not only will the engine become unbalanced but the water pump will turn fewer turns which means you could see a rise in water temperature.

Slight gain in bhp but slight loss in torque, also when the cranks are designed it is taken into account what wieghts are on either end, so if I were to even think about a lighter pulley I would have to put on a lighter flywheel to 'balance' the weight loss, and the loss of torque would far outway the gain in bhp for a road going car so I wouldnt tamper with them at all, I did put a lighter pulley and flywheel on a mk1 GTI once but that was when I was young and stupid, and it was only after doing it I realised it should only be done for track/event cars

I am so pleased that I am not the only person that understands this, I only posted this as I could see that people were about to buy and fit them. I still cannot believe that you could read this information and then think I must buy some?
