Leaking brake caliper!

3097 Views 18 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Paul C
Just fixed my alternator and got my front valence fixed back on when i noticed the back right brake caliper was leaking!! Going to get some more fluid tomorrow morning to stop it running dry, then to take the wheel off for a better look.

Such a bitch after i've just fixed one problem, but any ideas what it could be thats leaking exactly? Thought you lot would be best to ask about any common problems.

Cheers

Cheers for the quick reply mate.

Is that an easy part to change myself with the help of a haynes or is this gunna burn a nice hole in my pocket?

Brad
Take the wheel off and see where it is leaking from first.

You should be able to do it with the help of a haynes.
Cleaned it up and had a good look. It's definitely leaking where the brake pipe goes into the caliper, looks like an 11mm bolt going into a square fitting. Tried using the search bar to find people who have done this job before but got 3 pages in and not a lot.

I'm guessing this is where the aly washer is, just hope the stealers have it in stock.

Thanks for the help dudes.

Just a bit leaking out... been down the stealers and ordered in the part. Apparently the flexi hose comes attached, any decent guide on fitting the flexi pipe? Not sure if i need to totally bleed the system then do it or do it with the system full?

Bought myself an eezibleed to make it a bit easier too.

you will need to bleed the corner that you work on, a good tip is when you have the car jacked up and wheel off put a bar on the brake pedal as to hold it down - will stop it bleeding out and having to bleed the abs unit. replacing the flexi is easy enough just undo it at both ends (taking care not to round anything off) put the new one in place and tighten up, bleed the caliper then get a mate to stand on the pedal hard and check for any leaks. if you were closer id come and give you a hand

cheers for that mate, i'll let you know how i get on tomorrow, hopefully the brother won't moan to much about helping out. if only you we're closer lol

Brad
doing a full brake fluid change as well, haynes didn't say anything about bleeding the abs unit? thought you just had to activate the abs after its changed either through vagcom or by braking really hard.

thanks for the help jonny

Sorry to jump on your thread brad1707, literally happened to me the other day! But on both sides, going to get t sorted tomorrow, was it just the washers then? Im sure you dont need to replace the full flexi do you as its just a banjo isn't it?
No worries mate. I've read in other places the banjo is part of the flexi hose, the monkey at vw said this as well, if i find out its not all one part i'll be asking why i couldn't order the one part!

£16.40 for each side, should've got down there before the VAT rise!

Brad
i fixed my by replacing the washer with a copper one. when you tighten it, the copper being soft should fill in some gaps.
shaqs, did you just find one the same size down bnq and put it in its place? would save me some P and make the job a bit easier.

Brad
Not sure how to say or spell it but a doubty(?) washer has a copper inside and a rubber outside so if the bolt loosens slightly you wont have a leak as the rubber grips it, not sure if the brake fluid would eat the rubber though. Im just going for replacing the corroded washers with new ones of the same size from local diy/tool shop.
Will give it a go tomorrow morning then depending on how well it goes i'll be getting my money back!

Any idea on what size the washer is? Much easier than taking it apart to find out. Ta
Any idea on the size of washer? Just rung v to find out they sent the wrong part! Need my car tonight so bnq for a washer, although i'm not sure they sell copper washers?

Brad
on the same boat only my master cylinder went first, replaced it then the rear driver side started leaking so i just replaced both sides and the vacum pipe at the master cylinder, such a mission to get the brakes bleed still not happy with them.
Stupid cheap washers [:(] Mine went today on the nsr, lost most of my brake fluid! Not a clue anything was wrong until the warning light came on!

I will not be amused if the seal comes build onto the flexi hose!!!!!
