I was hoping that somene may have had experience with a faulty lambda sensor .

My girlfriends 2.0gti keeps chucking fault codes on VAG com

2 Faults Found:
16518 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1: No Activity
P0134 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17536 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Mult): System too Lean
P1128 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

On other ocasions ,, it just shows just the sensor fault only,,,and is recorded as " No signal " "Intermttent "

On normal steady driving ,,no faults and no problem occurs,,,,but as soon as you take it on the local bypass , near here , and do some fast driving or rev it hard ,,,,,,,,it goes faulty ,, and because of the " system too lean " code ,, MPG goes silly,,, it drops by a third.

I have checked the connections ,,with no success,,,the car also had a new MAF last year.

So is it new lambda sensor ??

And i guess it the , front of cat one too ,??

At ?90 + vat ,, I dont want to make the mistake of getting and fitting one ,, if its not that at fault .

Help Guys !!

Cheers

These Lambda sensors i've found can be finnicky things, and just because the light comes on doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with it. I had both of those faults funnily enough recorded on one of my VAG-COM logs and after i had my throttle body cleaned the codes have never returned. Might be worth trying that before you pay the stealers!! [;)]

My lambda sensor on my 2.0 is knackered too, my car has been chucking out black smoke because its overfueling so much.. my engine management light does not come on tho.. havent had a fault code check done.. but it went on a diagnostic check and that was the problem along with a fuel pressure reg.

Yea , my girlfriends 2.0 never shows the management light ,, and if the fault code is not removed straight away ,, that overfuels ,,so when I know it has logged the fault again ,, ( only when reved hard or left on idle for a long while ) I just remove the code on vag com ,and it runs fine till next time ,,,.

I just dont want to waste too much money on her car ,,becuase we will swap it next year at the latest ,or if gets too expensive ,a little sooner.

Just need to make sure we spend the money on the right thing.

Cheers

Yip, mine went as well. Wonder if it's most common on the 2.0's? That was over 6 months ago and been OK so far. The car seemed to run OK when the light was on though. Got it changed anyway as I was new to VW and well, a bit panicky when the engine light came up.

Yes wheeloon

The thread was understood ok,,,I knew about the oil burning issues on the 2.0,,,but not so much how it affected the lambda .

This is a good link to lambda , that I have found

http://www.picotech.com/auto/lambda_sensor.html

As this car is a APK engine and also used mainly for short journeys ,,,and looks like it showing a low voltage to the sensor ,,causing the ecu to richen the mixture up ,,it looks a high chance it is the Lambda , and considering the milage is now just short of 100K.

Since we changing the car within a year ,, I going to chance it with a new sensor .

Sugar79,,

The MAF died on my gf,s 2.0 last year , and that too never showed the engine management light either.

Ahhhh, Ok mate. I just had the feeling you were on fairly low mileage for some reason.

A 99 isn't that old though and 100k isn't that much these days for these cars i wouldn't have thought.

Sounds like this might be somthing for me to look forward to later though.

My sensor went 2 day's before Xmas. I was passing Heathrow VW at the time funnily enough, just going back to the house to get ready to pack for a trip up to Scotland over Xmas and the light comes on - had the car 2 months at that time. Nice. VW Heathrow were good at fitting me in (everywhere else was booked till mid Jan!!) Cost me ?200 (90 parts the rest labour) but didn't have the time to get cheaper prices.

My car does use about 1 litre every 1k miles. I'll keep it for a while though if there are no other probs. The thing is, i've had other probs with it - dropped windows and couple of niggly things that have been sorted. Also had the belt and pump down the other month so no point in changing it once i've spent that money on it. Just got to get in the habit of checking the oil more i suppose.

lol craig, sounds like you are describing my car there lol, ive had the maf go last year, my drivers side window fall into the door, got it fixed then the next week the passenger window fell in the door, got that fixed then the drivers side went again...urgh!!! now i need a new lambda sensor, fuel pressure reg and my cars booked into the garage next week because its overheating!! disarster!!

Ha!! The exact same happened to me with the windows! Booked in for it's 50k and the guy reckoned the drivers side was on the verge of going so he sorted that and said, you watch matey, you'll be in tomorrow when the other side goes. So we both had a laugh at the chances of that happening then i drive off. 3 day's later, clunk!! Passenger side drops. It's been alright so far though for the last few months so fingers crossed.

I'm still trying to get my overdraft done since I bought the car about 9 months back ?100 odd pounds here and there - like every few weeks for repairs really started to mount up. But i've got the big things out of the way for now - water pump, cambelt etc.

The garage recon my water pump has gone thats why the car is overheating, its just i have no water coming out the heater matrix which is wierd!!

I had my cambelt done about a month ago but i didnt know that it is wise to change the pump as well :-(

Hopefully i'll have all the silly things done as well soon lol

looks like its a common prob with the 2.0's - mines done the same as of 2 weeks ago... I changed the temp sender - didnt help - had to call the AA out in the end, he cleaned the throttle body an said that was the issue - car drives fine now after that - but the petrol usage is insane - not getting anthing better than 25mpg - even on a motorway journey... think the lambda will need changing so going to have to live with it for a few weeks till I can be fitted in.

whats the best place to get a lambda and not get ripped of something silly... this is the second time im going to have to change it! :(
